Did you replace just the gasket or the oil cooler as well? I had a similar issue and had to replace the oil cooler. That may be your problem.

i replaced just the cooler. You think there might be something internally faulty

Sorry i just replaced the gasket not the cooler

Did you have a look at the oil cooler very closely? I discovered very tiny holes where metal was gouged out the oil cooler around the gasket area. Don't know if the coolant caused that. My recommendation is change the oil cooler they are known to be a wear item.

Hey bud, looks like you and I are in the same boat.
mine happened Saturday night and got her towed to safety.

my mechanic is stripping and cleaning, but for me, it's a head gasket
that died. So I'm looking at nice bill in the next day or so...

if you want to thin the mayo out to clean, buy a bottle of Wynns radiator flush for R75 from Builders, and drive it till your car is nice n warm and the muck will come out (be careful of the hot mayo and water)
you'll be looking at about 35L of water to flush it out.
Once it's clean, add another bottle of flush just to be sure, flush and fill up, bleed and your good to go....

But I hope it's not a head gasket for you.

Hi.

I had the same thing couple months back. Problem with those pesky oil coolers they form hairline cracks inside which is virtually impossible to test. What I did to test, which worked for me, was to put pressure through the cooler's oil channel with a compressor and gauge. After heating it up a bit with a gas flame the pressure started dropping in the oil channel. Seems the cracks open as soon as it gets hot. I would replace the cooler and flush the system before going the head gasket route. Much cheaper and great chance it will sort your problem. It costed me just over R1000 to fix on my 320D (sourced the part from Leo Haese Hatfield) and still going good. Used Prepsol to flush, takes a bit of time and patience but can be done.

Hope this helps

Thank you very much for the help. Would you guys use a degreaser in the cooling system? Just to help get all the thick sludge out?

I used Prepsol (Engine degreaser) with very good result. Prepsol is a well known name though. I would be careful to use just any degreaser, some may contain chemicals that could potentially damage some of the seals in the coolant system. Prepsol did the trick for me. Still takes a bit of effort though. You need to flush a couple of times until you don't see any oil coming out when draining the system.

Last time I saw a mess like that, it was followed by giggling and baby talk.

My son thought it was funny to take his nappy off.....thankfully not as expensive or cleaning intensive.

Good luck.......learnt something new today which I need to be aware of as well.

Thanks.

:withStu:

Took ten or so flushes over a period of a week and replacing the coolant reservoir to get it to acceptable levels.
When using prepsol be careful not to keep in the cooling system for too long as it ca damage seals.
