Hi!

I am having a metallic grinding noise with my 320i e90 2009 (automatic). This started just after driving about 56km from work to home. When driving slowly to the drive way at home I noticed that there was a metallic grinding sound coming from wheels. I decided to drive the car to the person I know so he can check as well. He actually lifted the car up with garage jack and when spinning the wheels he noticed that the metallic grinding sound was coming from the rear diff. I also went under the car and I heard the sound from diff. Unfortunately this guy couldn’t do anything since he is not a mechanic. But he suspected that could be diff problem.

Have you removed the wheels to check ?
some years ago when I drove a golf GTi I had an issue where the Brake dust cover was out of shape and grinding on the disk, removed the wheel ,straightened the dust cover and the noise disappeared.
It possibly could also be your diff , do you get anyway warning signs that come up on the OBC? The traction control light (orange triangle with rotation symbol) specifically , I would imagine if it was your diff that would be a first sign?

Did you get any fault codes? If not, I suggest that you take to a reputable BMW mechanic and have it checked out.

Hi!

Even though we did not take out the wheel, but the Guy that was helping me specializes in tyres, and he saw nothing wrong with it. And there was no warning sign. I will definitely take the car to the BMW mechanic.

Thank you so much

Its the diff, they are a weak point on the e90.

Had the same problem, i bought a second hand diff from MD house for my 323i and Ross Duncan fitted it on.

No issues at all since

I had a similar issue a few months back on my E90.
I was pulling into a parking lot and heard this loud annoying grinding noise.
Did some research and ended up removing the wheel the next morning.
It turned out to be a "pebble" that was trapped between the inner of the rear brake disk and brake shield.
I simply pushed the shield back and the pebble fell off.
I still cannot believe it was a "pebble" till this day.
Perhaps give it try?
