@ Prospect: I own a 325i at the moment, so you really hurt me cars feelings when you made that statement about a 325 being a donky... :nono:

I was up all night, having to drive her around, looking for 320d and 330d bmw's to race, just so she could prove to me she wasn't a donky, but a full blooded race horse. :excited:

She got her first opertunity against a E90 320d, and I tell you, she was off the line like a cheetah spotting a baby buck, she was so quick off the line that I almost got left behind... :mmm: ... and the win was hers.

then a few minutes later we had a go against a blue E90 330d. Once again she jumped off the line like a F1 car, and it was history for the 330d. Another victory!!! :joy:

She then got her chance against a 335i, and although I was scared, I thought I will sit back and let her have a go... and you wont believe it... SHE WON!!! :bravo:

Right after that, it was a new M5, and I knew, this is where she will go down, for sure, but guess what... once again SHE WON!!! :dropjaw:

Now I know you all are thinking that once again I must be spinning the truth, or that the other cars were not really racing, but I ask you all this...

... Is it my fault if Fountains BMW keep their cars locked up, and unable to participate fully in a race??? :dunno:

All I know is my 325i is no donky!!!

You blowing smoke here:idea:

Ok, this is how I see things, the Diesel has the torque and Petrol has the vrooooooooooom. Personally I never thought of owing a Diesel as it always sounds like a tractor and nobody wants a tractor on the road. BTW, ever since I test drove the E90 320D, fell in :inlove:. Performance + economy = awesome car. I still love the petrol 325i, 330i and it will go on and on and for 1 reason only, PETROL HEAD.
So nobody can say which is better, they can just say which THEY love better.

Sorry Cois. What I really wanted to say is the 325i Auto is a donkey. I'm not trying to offend anyone with that statement but after having owned one (E90 325i auto) it's just how I feel about it. Perhaps I should blame the 330d which I replaced it with

330d/320d. The 325i is a donkey.

@prospect - There must be something wrong with your 325i (if you own one).
I had the exact same line on my 323i (being a donkey), and since I fixed up the inlet manifold plumbing, the car is just a pleasure to drive.
Unless you are an x M3 driver :joy:

****************************

If you like sound get a sound system

I am biased toward diesels - especially the 330d is a rocket of note.

If you are from the M3/M5 stable, you would probably disagree and don't worry too much about fuel consumption anyway. Because you did not buy your BMW for good fuel consumption, right? Now that is the sound you should be after :joy:

Sorry for the little hijack, but it pays relevance to your decision

There are two questions about diesels that I can't put to bed:

1.) Is it worth paying more for it as opposed to a petrol (yah here we go again, but I am curious to see opinions on this) and when will TCO be better than that of the petrol models. From acquisition, to services, tyres everything. IOW Is the diesel really cheaper than the petrol model? Diesels generally have a larger price tag.

2.) Manual or auto - Word has it that the auto will save you from the morning and afternoon gym in your BMW  if it is an automatic transmission.
Then again they are prone to failure (especially the 330d) due to some serious torque going through the box.

Not trying to fuel a petrol vs diesel thread (again). :sorry:

I have a 325i and it gives me between 11.5 and 13km/l city driving. :argh:

BTW diesels do not like short distance driving.

In the current economic climate, I need something that is more economical, or sell something

You made a good point there. I owned a 180kW ATW S3 Sportback before the 325i; hence I only kept it for 3 or so months. It was auto too and we all know how 'slow' the auto NA E90's are.

Hahaha, Thanks Guys! I always loved diesel cars, have had diesel cars before and loved them!! Another question, Auto or manual?

Is the Auto that much slower from the line than the Manual? I have never driven one of the newer BMW's with auto box, had the 325Ci SMG (2003 model) and it was terrible!!

If you are going to be in town and lots of city driving, I would seriously suggest an auto, purely because the diesel in manual is crap in traffic, well, my E46 was.

my i20 ran abouy 1.5 cars behind a e90 325i, they sound nice but just dont have that grunt.
If i would choose i probably would have a 325i, because everyone is going for 320d and a nice 325i is very rare to find.
N/A engine can be hammered all the time with no heat surges or turbo problems, in term resulting in a longer and hassle free car.

If you worried about fuel consumption learn to drive conservatively and trust me most cars will be able to give you good consumption.

Have a look on autotrader and see how many diesels are for sale in comparison to 325's, scarce car meaning it will be easier to sell and hold a better future value.

Just my 5c

I'd have the 320d. Excellent torque, good power, very tuneable, more km on a tank than the petrol, only thing that the 325i does better is its sound.

Interesting, I read somewhere many BMWs are fitted with data recording equipment that tracks things like how the car is driven, at which revs and speeds etc and that information is used to tailor the cars to drivers in the next generation.

It gives BMW an insight into how these cars are driven and it was found that the E90 320d is the car driven the fastest in the E90 range. I will see if I can find that article again.

http://www.autocar.co.uk/www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/242108/

To this end, BMW has fitted thousands of existing customers’ cars with sophisticated black boxes that record all aspects of their use, helping engineers to plan the shape of future models.

For example, the research shows that of all BMW’s models, the 320d is driven the fastest and over the greatest distances by owners. This information will directly influence work on replacements for the 320d to optimise fuel efficiency in the light of this model’s particular duty cycle.

If I could present the other side of the coin to confuse things further, the 325i is much better on the open road freeway driving than stop/start driving, where the fuel consumption does drop, but will never match a 320d. My opinion is its all to do with gearing, as the 325i enjoys stretching it legs on the freeway but the tall gearing affects lower end acceleration.

The 325i does have smoothness and refinement on its side though, something that is lacking in the 320d, and the 325i 6cyclinder does sing at higher rpm, its sonarous sound is addictive. Also with the 320d, when you drop your window down there is always that diesel odour and clattery sound around. The sound is even more apparent when you drive through a drive through or any confined space, its still truck like. Probably is the reason why I switched back to a petrol car, but that's just by personal choice.

If you enjoy the thrill of driving, the 325i is still good in my books, in that you can rev the engine and smile, :joy: I really missed that when I owned the 320d.

So aftrer reading through this thread again, and after driving my own 325i around the entire day, I must say, IF I ever decide to go the diesel route again, I will seriously be in tears EVERY day, because I will be missing that soundtrack...

I have to agree and that sound of the 6 is awsome. a 320d is like having a comrads running female but a 325i is like having a nice blond in the gym:ty:

Congrats on the buy.

I own a diesel and have previously owned a 325i. I do miss that car and the sound. I have also owned an E90 320d. Good car.

The lci 320d's are really nice cars. Same power as the first E46 330d.

the diesels require a much different driving style than the petrols. Once u figure it out, the diesel is just an engaging and fun as the petrol. I love my car, and would buy another diesel without thinking twice. Its not only about fuel consumption.

Anyways. Your choice has been made. I believe that it was the right choice. Congrats.
