Leave both, buy a merc :cartel:

Ok ok I would go BMW... i could not bring myself to get another Audi after having the A3 and my dad having 3 A4s.

As much as I like the cars, it just felt too disconnected, the A4 B8 that is...a lot of buddies bought them however every single one of them ended up with 2.0T 155kw versions after having 1.8T.

I would say go ahead and get the 2.0T with S-line to keep you satisfied, otherwise 320d.

I love my C250 CDi but for a great, comfy all rounder...can bang it around but without AMG pack, she is a bit flimsy but then again that suspension is not for throwing corners.

Do you mean this one, I have been looking at this and I am a big fan on these having inherited a C350 in the same spec. i just have this fear that when things go wrong with Merc... Big numbers come up.

400px-Mercedes_C_220_CDI_BlueEFFICIENCY_Serienausstattung_AMG-Sportpaket_%28W204%29_front_20100818.jpg

Yes that it is, you know e the W204 facelift. honestly, i have been looking at some guy's repair bills and the Merc is actually in line. parts are sometimes cheaper at the stealership and not far off from BMW thus far.

The car is solid, I can tell you that much and it is packed with tech...however that can be a downfall depending on what you looking at. i say E90 is the best balance in reliability , tech, power and consumption coupled with good looks. Merc if you want luxury and just want to enjoy the drive relaxed.

Audi...well yeah....i really like the S/RS models...anything underneath is meh for me. but that is my opinion.

So i think the new 320d is amazing and is a better drive than any Vag 2.0tdi..

HOWEVER...

What you are looking for is the older versions and in my opinion VAG takes it hands down.. better build quality on older Audi a4 compared to 3 series..

My dad had an A4 1.9TDI From new to 285000km NOT A DAYS PROBLEM.. only a battery was replaced..
Around the same time we had a few friends with 320d with endless problems, to the point where they bought petrol cars or switched brands and stayed diesel.

So for me b6 a4 or the b7 is better car than 320d e46 and e90..

The new f series diesels are on :smilebounce:another level and i salute BMW for their product.. i wouldn't mind a 320d as a daily.. no garage space..

Audi 2.0Tdi... Nope..

Family member had a Q5's entire common rail system replaced due to major issues on a 3 year old car, also had to pay for it, no maintenamce plan like BMW, etc..

The E90 is aging though too, the Audi B8 looks better IMO

That is a very nice car but in that budget I can only get the first gen which was not really good looking unless you get the RLine... But that is a good call.

These are tough choices, this coming weekend I am going to test drive both cars again and whatever I walk out of feeling the most satisfied then is the winner.

It's hard being a petrol head.

Thank you all for your contributions to this and personal experiences with them.

I currently own an A4 8.5 tdi which I had since new in and its manual, it currently has 110k on the clock and absolutely zero issues. Compared to the E90 320d IMO the Audi is the better car - performance is similar but the Audi has a better ride and interior.

The Jetta tdi is a great all rounder, you can get 1 with leather, heated seats, pdc, sunroof etc for probably 30k less than the bmw /audi.

Within that budget the OP will be looking at an LCI E90 320d which has the same motor in a the pre-LCI F30 320d. I fail to see how one is bad and the other one great?

Also, around the time of the 1.9tdi the pre-LCI E46 320d was out, which was known for being a very problematic motor, so it’s not surprising that many people had issues with them.

Anyway, as for my pick, I would go for the BMW 20d. The VAG diesels feel punchy and responsive low down, but run out of steam a lot quicker than the BMW does. Then you also often get the awful pairing of multitronic and a 20d which makes for a dull drive coupled with bad fuel consumption when compared to a BMW 20d

I read all this and dont know, i know its a BMW forum and i dont drive a Beemer anymore but all the BMW okes say VAG is kak anb BMW is the way haha.

I loved my 320d, i like the mother in-laws 120d.

We never had a multitronic box issue on our B7 - havnt read or heard of any B8s / B8.5s 2.0tdis on the Audi forum having issues...
Its the same 2.0tdi motor they use in the VW's

All new Audi's comes with a 5 year freeway plan (Motorplan) - so above is odd...

@Dirtydeedsman hope you get what you want, good luck with the search.

As it turns out, not sure if its my profile or not but I have contacted a few insurance companies and I get a higher quote for the Beema than the AUDI

Example:

2011 Audi A4 (b8) 2.0Tdi S line vs 2010 BMW E90 320d Msport

Comprehensive cover
Private use
No engine upgrades
No additional/upgraded after market sound
Same day time and Night time parking for both cars
Insured for Retail Value
No tracker or car hire
License never been endorsed
Never claimed in my life

Best quote:

Audi R1185 excess R5750
Beema R1585 excess R8000

Something is wrong here... My 2010 335i Motorsport insurance premium is R1350p.m and excess is R2500, I am 26 and with Santam.. Also have extras insured with them. :fencelook:

Perhaps the BMW is seen as a 'riskier' vehicle but my point is the quote itself is rather high. Not being biased, but a good 320d LCI is all you need for a good daily (bar the 330d). I had an Audi 1.9TDI as my first car for 4 years, loved it but once you go rear wheel drive...

I'm 31, having a license for donkey years. Or maybe Florida Hills is considered a high risk area?

Hi,

Check my signature - I am an Audi fan.
But, when it came to choosing a diesel compact executive car, I went for BMW, after months of in-depth research.
The reasons are simple:
1. BMW has a lot more real world experience (good and bad) with turbo diesels in an SA context. They burned their fingers badly with the the E46 320d turbo failures in 2000-2001 (look for an old Car Magazine article called "Pop goes the turbo" by Jake Venter) and their product development team ensured that each iteration of the 320d built upon the mistakes of the older model. The 320d is arguably the best balanced performance/consumption/reliability German in the SA market (MB c220d and Audi 2.0tdi are close 2nd and 3rd respectively).
2. The A4 is FWD and the torque steer is off putting in a premium car. BMW (and MB) handle their torque much better/refined, being RWD.
3. Audi SA is a dick to its customers when it comes to known engine issues out of Freeway Plan ("motorplan"). While the rest of the world have claimed out of plan costs from Audi AG for rectifying the oil consumption fault, Audi SA will make you pay for an oil consumption test and then in 4/5 cases reject your claim.
4. The Multitronic gearbox is crap. Full stop.
5. The Audi manual box is good (I had a B8 1.8T with this), but automatic is the way to go for any diesel car, unless you like constant gear changing to stay in the that tight sweet spot rev range (unlike a decent petrol motor). In this case, an Auto BMW (no crap CVT or DSG system) is the way to go.
6. BMW interiors are crap compared to Audi (my 2010 B8 feels more premium than my 2017 F30!), but the BMW has a logical simplicity and solidity to everything that should make it more reliable in the long run.

I would say go for the E90 320d, with some good aftermarket warranty. Or, if you are going Audi, then go for the 1.8TFSI manual (B8.5) - you should have some plan left.
