P1000 --

Its who you know not what you know mate... Neil i believe doesnt work at TurboDirect anymore, so that contact is gone. However that price of R980.00 is still cheaper than turboexchanges price for a copy/fake kit made by turbointernational or mellet - (its quite simple - its a no brainer) Also the GT superkit made by garrett DOES repair the VNT turbochargers EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM in the range between GT15 - GT2560 Other sizes outside of this range are not included by this kit and/or use another kit.

Garrett do not endorse VNT repairs as there is noone on the planet with the equipment able to set the min and max flow settings on the vanes and guide nozzles -- not 100% anyway. Another thing is that the non-VNT turbochargers E.G GT1749S units use the same internals as the VNT's do.

In my opinion, i would never buy a Diesel ANYTHING for the reason that they are crappy oil burning pieces of ... turd! The fuels here are not 100% compatible, they stink, they smoke, they are noizy, they vibrate, they dirty and when they fail (and they will fail!) - dont you then wish you had a petrol something, oh yes you do! --- man o man, i hate them! but thats my opinion.

kindly keep these opinions to yourself, especially on a bmw board where there are a lot of diesel lovers..

You are entitled to your opinion, I have a slight different view.

On the subject of the VNT issue, would this max and min need resetting on a rebuild? In other words, does it change when you take it apart? I agree on the rebuild kit, I would not consider using anything other than OEM parts, if I cannot find it, I would rather replace the whole thing.

Interesting, though: the Porsche turbo is the only current production petrol car running a VNT turbo. The problem with the petrol is the elevated exhaust temps, for this reason they use Inconel to make the vanes, which is quite expensive, but it can take the heat.

P1000 -- depending on how the turbo is stripped you might have to get the arm length re-set. But regards the rebuild kit, if its just the kit you are replacing and nothing else, its simple and you can get away from the arm length setting easily.

The only thing -- get the vanes and guide nozzles cleaned nicely, DO NOT SAND OR MEDIA BLAST THEM!!! You want the operation of the VNT assembly to be free and easy. Sticking VNT assembly will result in problems you dont want to know about.

If there is any damage to the rotating assembly - REPLACE THE UNIT - PERIOD! Once again buy only original product, there are chinese products out there that seem like a good deal but you will buy twice thats the onyl guarantee you get with buying Chinese.

Thanks. Now I just need to find a way of determining the condition of the turbo... (don't really want to take it out before I know what I'm in for)
