320d - the best car in the real world?

Ive owned mine for two years now (E90 LCI) and the whole reason i bought one, was for a budget of under 160k, there was no better executive, sporty (Msport),frugal and fast car on the market.

It really is a bargain

The chassis is amazing, Sylvia pass foot flat, it just sticks. such a direct and real feel chassis.

Long distance to Maputo.... get there with half a tank.

After a remap, it just becomes a perfect, all round car.

Overtaking is effortless, when you ditch the run flats, the ride becomes very silent with minimal road noise. A treat on long distance drives.

Very happy with it.

I had a F30 320d, solid car. Was a good daily! Auto is a must for any diesel though!
I did find on the open road it ran out of steam, so to overtake and so on you had to play with it a bit/ think ahead a lot.
Only other factor would be the service intervals for oil changes, other than those 2 points, not a bad car yes.

Surely if you say it is just like a corolla does that not mean the corolla is the best. :tease:

If "real world" means easy to drive and cheap, the Toyota wins that hands down. Bar point 5 which more want than a must have when commuting.

P.S. I think my e46 is the best car in the world :roflol:

Well, Toyota is the Rolls Royce of reliability...

If you are overtaking at, say, 130 to 150, then it may run out of puff.
The higher revs kill the performance.
Anything below 120, and I find it pulls nicely in-gear acceleration.

I don't really agree with the overtaking issue.I drove to CPT from PTA with an LCI 320d F30 and I eventually had to set a speed warning at 170kph because it just did all overtaking so effortlessly. It obviously lacked the punch and the amount of torque of the 330d and it's incomparable to the 335i,but it was more that fast enough to be at home on the open road and more than happy to do PTA to CPT in less than 12 hours while still returning 18.8km/l at the pumps.

I would actually agree with the statement that the 320d is arguably the best "real world" car in the world.

all good and well but what about the 120d?? how does a e90 320d compare to a e87 120d?

The e87 is an amazing car and really runs well, but it isn't spacious enough for most and the build quality isn't the same as the e90. It handles amazing though and has an massive boot for a car of that size.

I fully agree, i own a 2012 320d F30 Sportline currently @ 170K on the clock and that's just a lovely car for me, did a software remap as well a month ago and it feels way better, even on Comfort mode the acceleration is so much improved. Overtaking is just effortless even on high speed. My next performance mod will be the dpf removal. Been doing a bit of spirited driving and the excitement affected my tyres due to increased torque but i've lately changed the behaviour - easy take off then hard acceleration from 60 km/h, not sure if that makes much difference. My consumption is still good even after the software remap, i get +-6L/100km combined, except of course when i go heavy on it.
