320d range? damper pulley?

I read up guyz getting 17-18km/L. My OBD constantly reads 11-12km/L.

I recently drove to Durban. Filled up at Hartbeespoort in NW, just out side rustenburg. I drove to Dbn and only filled up again driving back at Escort Ultra city. Infact it was at Engine +/- 50km from escort, and still then I could still do about 70km. And when I calculated everything I estimated that I could have done close to 1100Km on a tank.

1. What's the range on 1 full tank, how many in do u guyz drive on 1 tank?
2. So is the OBD sick for suggesting I'm doing 12km/L when most of u are getting 17km/L?
3. I am told my damper pulley is in its way out. Apparently when they start the car it makes some noise (similar to birds sign), so the guys tell me to change it. How can I inspect it for cracks?
4. How do I know if the turbo is on its way out? is it supposed to be whistling? I'm thinking it's sound of it spooling?

1100 kms on a tank sound fine to me. You getting closer to 15-16kms per litre if your tank it's 63L.

Yes 1100km on a tank sounds fine to me as well.

Then the pulley. Remove your engine cover. Take a high qaulity pic.
You'll see the hairline cracks.

OBC is not 100% accurate, 1100km is excellent for long range driving, and +-800 for 100% town driving.

Do as cornel suggests. Check the pulley for hairline cracks. That's usually the 1st sign that it's on its way out.

My best was +- 1180km IIRC on my F30 320d still had some to go but I rather filled up! Now I am happy if I see a 1/3rd of that per tank :rollsmile:

Um, because it will eventually leave you stranded on the side of the road if you don't do required preventative maintenance?

Dunno about you, but personally I don't like breaking down at the side of the road, possibly on route for a family vacation?

Because once it looks like this you are stuck on the side of the road. Not the safest thing in our country:

That's just about as much as it can take before it throws the belts off, or explode.

BTW, there were no sign of failure on the front of the pulley, so I would change it if it starts making chirping noise when you start or switch the car off.

I'm on 105000km now, car is certainly fine and I average 6.8l/100km most in stop go traffic.
but would really want to get this done as it seems its quite a common issue on the 320d.

It all depends, average use see many change at 150k, some have gone over 200k and there are those that give in from around 100k. My suggestion is to inspect it regularly, but unfortunately there aren't any signs leading up to the failure. I was on a trip to durban and it failed after 600km, parking at my parents house.

I think it's more an age issue than a mileage issue. If the car is more than 8 years old, just replace it.

The OEM part is around R7000 excluding fitment, last time I replaced one, but word has it that they have/had a special on them.

I think that fear is overcome by the fear of mechanical failure during work (in the air), rather than when getting to and from work (on the road)
