320D or 330D

Hi Gents,
I am planning on replacing my current ride (Audi A4, 2.0 TDI 2014) as its soon out of plan. Anyway long story short I don't like the look of the new A4, the New A3 is attractive but they don't have Diesel models as yet (or any that I have seen available or impressed with).

I have my heart set on a F30 preferably the 330D still within plan, Must have sunroof etc. My questions on this "choice" is the following:
1. Is it worth getting the 330d over 320d
2. What are the common issues the 330d has that the 320d doesn't
3. Is the F30 planning a facelift soon, if so i would hold onto my current ride a bit longer till then.
4. Is the M sport similar to Audi's Sline (Exterior/ interior accessories) or can it increase performance.

Your expert advice/s will be much appreciated

The F30 LCI has been on the market for a while now. Unless you want to hold on for the next gen 3 series.

As far as I know its just the cosmetics that are different, the engines and exahust will be the same. There are optional extras to make yours different at a cost.

LOL agreed, but have you seen the prices lately of the fully specced 320d's ie priced similar/same to 330i and 330d money.

Fun factor? Hell yes. Only reason I'd consider a 320d over a 330d is if I was looking for the lowest possible fuel consumption.

2. What are the common issues the 330d has that the 320d doesn't
The 330d eats rear tyres... Massive amount of torque, especially when modded.

3. Is the F30 planning a facelift soon, if so i would hold onto my current ride a bit longer till then.
There was a facelift on the 3 series a while back so I'd not worry too much about it. I'm sure someone else on here will be able to clarify.

4. Is the M sport similar to Audi's S-line (Exterior/ interior accessories) or can it increase performance.
The BMW M-Sport kit is mostly cosmetic changes. The M-Sport suspension is different to the standard suspension though.

If you can wait just over a year the new 3 series will be launching (2018 - rumored late 2017 early 2018). So the LCI was introduced in 2015 and should run for 3 years. The update cycle on the BMW 3 series is around 6 years with a mild facelift midway through its life cycle. The new BMW is rumored to be longer and wider than the current 3 series with a weight reduction of about 80kg. Might be worth the wait:chef:

What's your budget first?

That's the question everyone should have asked you first (You said within plan still). No point getting a 330D with a year of plan left, when with the same money you can get a 320D with like 3/4 years of plan still.

Depends on how much you want to spend.

How long do you keep your cars? Up to maintenance plan time I guess? Then a higher mileage 330d might not work our for you if that is the case..

320d is very good on fuel consumption, decent car for a daily
330d should be more fun due to the torque

Go for 2014+ models at least if you are not going the LCI route.

On the open road @ 140 - 160km/h my consumption sits on 5.5L/100km. In town varies between 7.5 - 9.5L/100km.

Sensible choice is a 320d with lots of plan left.

If you are in a financial position that allows you to spend a little more, go for the 330d

Wait until December (which coincides with my final service) when the upgraded model is launched. As I never buy the first version of a new model, I will still shop for a new F30 330d Motorsport edition at a discounted price as they have to be rid of "old" stock. (I would prefer this option)


Option 3:

Take the plunge now and get the car, albeit probably with less optional extras ticked (My Current itch for the a 330d would love this option).

Thanks for all the replies and sage advice guys,
But as I cover so many km's per year (incl. countless trips to PE) my preference will always be for a car under plan. Now I know I can save, put money in the slush fund for emergency's or take out hollards policy etc - Been there, done that & didn't like it. (Car payment plus extra for hollards, and fork out towards the service) Just easier to pay 1 piper.

I also get that paying a car off adage etc etc, but for me personally, I find its pointless keeping an asset beyond its life cycle and for modern cars this tends to be 4 years before they start costing some serious ching. If I were to keep a car beyond its natural life cycle it would be a classic like M3 or RS4 and would then be mentally/financially prepared for it .

That's just my opinion though so please nobody should take offence, and I am a life's too short to be driving a piece of crap kinda guy.

Bottom line is ima scratch this itch !:biglol:

Nope no updates, with what's happening currently (Junk Status etc.) I will hold onto my current cars for a little while longer.

As for the tyres, just spent 7k for two yesterday :thumbdo:
