Hi Guys,
I am looking at purchasing a 320d E90 Msport 2006 with 220 000km on clock. Seller say funny noise on clutch when starting,
What is the worse scenario?
When does one change the timing chain on these motors

Clutch and flywheel replacement about R15 to R20k. Had my Z4 done three years ago for about R13k.. No need to change the timing chain on that motor. Newer motors had problems iirc.

Sorry man, i have no experience of the timing chain issue. Know only what i have read about it. Google it for more info. Btw., seems you are having quite a few issues with your car??

At this stage that seems to be the case yes, theres some white smoke as well as the rattling engine, will start with the actuator and replacement of turbo seals and take it from there....hopefully this will be all thats needed....🙌

Timing chains were an issue on the N47 motors pre 2009 (I think) , the updated N47T motor after 2009 didnt have this issue.
I would get quotes on a new clutch and flywheel before making this purchase an use it to haggle a bit.

I think it was mid to end of 2009 when this was changed, so the early 2009 models would have the normal N47 (not N47T).

All prefacelift (2006 to early 2009) 320d's should have the M47 motor. Maybe do some research on that motor and timing chain issues or any other concerns as it was known to be more troublesome/not as reliable as the N47 from what I have read.

My 2008 Msport got the N47 motor, the issue here seems to be the actuator thats faulty, just praying the swirl flaps are still fine....

Thanks bud I learnt something new. 🙌

Always thought the M47 continued from the E46 to the prefacelift E90 and the LCi E90 was the first to get the N47 motor.
E90s all came out with the N47 engine variants, there are few early E87s that came with the M47

That's not true. The E90 had M47 motors up until 2008 when it changed to N47

So I've just clarified with a friend who is a BMW tech and you are correct!

2005 to 2007 prefacelift E90's should all be M47.

The first gen N47 was only introduced to the E90 in 2008 (prefacelift as well) which ties up with what @Dnice says with his 2008 model having an N47.

Hi all, just some feedback on the 320d rough idle problem...
Had the diagnostic dr out (R450) and the MAF sensor are faulty, but lots of smoke from manifold, got the gaskets today (R670) from BMW, so 2morrow will start with gaskets and take it from there

Will keep u posted
