320d boost problem

Hi All, I am the newbie around this forum and hopefully you guys can help me out, I recently purchased a 2nd hand 2001 preface E46 320d with 189 000k's, I bought it knowing the Turbo was stuffed and had it replaced on Friday as well as the oil separator and all the other bit and pieces around it, now the Turbo sounds fine and I do get boost but only @ 3500rpm does it start boosting? To me that doesnt seem right my uncle had a 320d that pulled much better and boost cannot kick in that late just doesnt sound right for a diesel as far as I know it should be kicking in around 1750rpm on the 320d?

Anyway what do you think it can be, can it be the Turbo boost is set to low? I did an OBD scan on the car with an Auto Com unit which gives more detail and I did get an error for Boost pressure sensor but I googled around and cant seem to find any info regarding this? if anyone can help me please i want to sort this car out so I can start with the rest of it...

your help greatly appreciated!

Vacuum problem. Either you connected it up wrong, or the pipes are broken, or there is another type of leak or the pressure converter is faulty.

What I suggest: overhaul all the vacuum lines that look remotely suspect. (At that age it is a good thing). Don't buy vacuum lines from midas, because then you will be going through all that trouble again next year. Either buy from BMW - the original small lines are 3.5mm sold per meter at something like R200/m. Or get some from Centurion hydraulic, closest they have is 3.2mm, when I bought last year IIRC it was R50/m and it is quality German hose.

If you still experience the problem, block off the vacuum hoses to the EGR, and swap the EGR and turbo pressure converter (its the same part). And try again.

Easy way to test is to look if the turbo's VNT mechanism moves when you start the car. If it moves all the way, you should have power through the range again.

Part 1 is the pressure converter:

Welcome to the forum, and don't disappear when your car is working. Oh, and please report back when you found the problem.

Thanks I will aks them to check the vacuums, maybe they connected it up wrong somewhere that all I can think, I also used an Auto Com today and I came across something that says Limp home mode = ON but the only error I am getting is that boost pressure sensor but that might be because the vacuum is not right, well I hope its something as small as that because after 3500rpm its goes like a rocket just suck whens you change gears and you have to wait for it to get to about 3500rpm again...

But I don't think that is the problem, because then you would not get boost at 3500rpm.

I had exactly the same problem. It does 'feel' like you have boost at 3500rpm, but P1000 is spot on with the vacuum problem. Either wrong connected or pipes are perished.

It would pay to redo all the vacuum hoses either way.

Strange thing is when the guy fitted the new turbo he did replace all the pipes on the car due to them already being full of oil and old I suspect he might of connected something wrong there is def boost because the revs suddenly jump and you can feel the increase in torque before I replaced the Turbo it was slow all the way through...

I will report back when the car has gone in

Cool. If everything and the tubes are correctly fitted and the problem persists, then the actuator must be adjusted to let the boost kick in on a lower rpm. There is a threaded rod on the actuator (plunger) to adjust this.
Good luck.
