a 1.6 polo will hold value way better than a bmw :fencelook:

Depends, I think of my happiness as a value, and with a BMW the value has remained at a constant high

I also say 1 series or perhaps consider something as an alternative with a service plan at least till 90k/100k. Test drive other cars, Toyota, VW, etc, none will give u the same great feeling of a BMW but from a maintenance perspective, also insurance, they might be cheaper:=):

Nothing wrong with an E90 320i as a daily commuter:inlove:

E46 does make more sense if out of motorplan and its value has already dropped, but newer = better so if your heart is set on an E90 320i, go for it:rollsmile:

I have nothing against the e90's but in your price range you would be getting a car that is either out of motor plan or near the end so you would need to look at maintenance and reliability. Also, 100k km on a 2007 car vs a 2004 car is quite a difference.

Would a e46 with 100000 km on be alot less on maintenance than an e 90, a 1 series (120) might also be a solution, I agree a polo would hold its value better but on a car of R100000 to R150000 you might be losing R20k more on the bm and over a 4 year or so period its defs worth it. The thing is if I buy a e90 it will most prob be out of motor plan but a e46 aswell so thats why im asking how much maintenance is on such a car.

Another question is what is the interval in Km's major services on the 1 series aswell as 3 series?

Remember that the e90's have run flat tyres which would cost quite a bit to replace. In terms of general maintenance, oil, spark plugs, etc, I don't think you would see a massive difference. You are only servicing every 20,000km or so.

I would say that the e46 parts are cheaper because they are more readily available. There are several places in Cape Town (I see that you are in the Stellenbosch area) where you can get parts from, the e46 is a very well known car and there is so much information available through the internet.

You can never know what might fail on a car. You could drive the car for 100k km and never have a single issue but you might also be in a situation where your power steering pump gives out a week after you buy the car. This goes for any car.

When was the last time you service anything other than BMW. My last service on my getz was R3500. for normal service. Brake pads replacement was R1100. A nother rep at work drive a VWTDI 1.9 golf and we have had our cars the same amount of time and we worked out he has spent 3 x what I have on maintenance. BMW service being expensive is not true. Yes at a stealer but any car at a stealer is expensive. But again Toyota, vw are scary expensive to maintain lately.

E46, E46, E46.

As for insurance. I am paying R400 per month less for Gopher than I did for my getz.

The AurisX has a service plan till 90k so havent had to pay yet but I agree that all stealerships are expensive, even Toyota.

My point to him wasnt just about servicing, overall running costs of a BMW vs say a Corolla is much higher, but then again so is the driving experience better on the BMW.

1 x Runflat 18" tyre = R3500
Oil change on BMW = R700 (private) and must be R1000+ at the stealer. And on the N42/N46 engines, you have to change oil at every 10k due to sludge build-up.
Fuel consumption in everyday traffic, BMW is heavier.
Clutch replacement, BMW is more expensive.
Insurance, BMW is more expensive.

If I was a student, I'd rather look for a more conventional car for long term, that wont break my pocket. Whats the use buying a new BMW out of motorplan as parts would be difficult and expensive to source.

As agreed, the 1 series or E46 makes more sense, cheaper maintenance, insurance and wear and tear.......and its a BMW:rollsmile:

As has been said before, e46 :) also if re-sell value worries you rather go for an older car (5 years +) as it will already have gone though the worst part of the depreciation, and if re-sell value REALLY worries you, buy a toyota or a honda

Your starting to get somewhere here with the e46 idea and makes sense, the thing is yes I am stil a student but almost finished so start working soon and dont want to buy a student car now. what would be a good km range to look for an e46 and is it possible to find one without worn out leather seats

The e46 is far from a student car, I would look for something with less than 150k km though the engines in these cars are tough if you keep them well cooled and well oiled no reason they can't easily last double that and more. Yup you can still find them without worn out seats, but they will all probably show signs of normal were on the bolsters etc.

20k km per year is avg. so 5 years = 100k.

We got my 318i with 133K km on the clock.. The interior looks like it would have if the car had just rolled off the factory line... its now on R150k km... & still going strong

NOT A STUDENT CAR

When I hear student car I think Citi Golf, Hyundai Atos, etc. BMW does not come into that equation

I would say, go and drive an e46, and see what you think. I love my car and I can assure you that it's still has a lot more going for it than most newer cars.

When I hear student car Citi Golf, Hyundai Atos, etc. I think Tin can, Death trap, Stolen etc

But a BMW in that equation is another story... Safe, Reliable, Not as easily stolen...

From all the post maybe you should buy the polo and get a BMW when you are a bit more ready. Cars break, eat your money, do weird unexpected things and annoy you sometimes but its all part of owning a BMW. Even if you get a car with MP there is no guarantee that it won't do weird things all the time. All this being said I would much rather drive an E46 330i with some dodgy parts than a E90 320i with MP. With a 330i you can feel the heart and soul of that German engineering that BMW is famous for whereas in a 320i you only feel fat, slow and like you are in everyone's way and you really wasted your money. Not sure if this helps but hell its my opinion.

No you guys understanding me wrong, im stil student yes but not for long and want to buy a car that ill be happy with for the next 5 years of my life, thats one of the reasons rather going for a BMW than any other small class A car. My mind is pretty much made up on a e90 320i or 320d.

Do any of you guys have any experience with warrantys from 2nd hand dealers and are they worth it.
What would be the better more reliable buy for a car with 100k on the clock, a 320i or 320d?
Yes I know the d would be much lekkerder to drive etc but thats not my primary criteria for now
