318ti - mod advice

Hi Guys,

I'm a newbie to the forum, intro here:
darrynjay intro

I'd like to do some things to my ti when i have the cash. I don't know alot about tuning cars so any advice would be great.
I wanna make her go a wee bit faster. I don't have a heavy foot but i'd like to have the extra power there for when
i need it.

So yeah, I'm NOT looking to install turbos & nitros & $h1t like that. What do you guys suggest i do with a budget of R10k?

Also, above that i'm definitely gonna hook up a set of wheels. I've decided on black. I quite like the ones that a little
deep. And then deeper at the back than in front. Where should i go look for the best deals in CT & should I only be lookin
at BMW or BMW replicas? Or is it ok to look at the Aline & so on. I just don't wanna pull up next to a old mazda sporting the same wheels, if you know what i mean, lol. I can't spend more than R10k on wheels.

Thanks in advance guys!

For R10k, I would say exhaust, chip and filter. And if you have some money left over maybe a slightly higher ratio diff.

No, BMW won't be able to help (They only have performance type parts for the newer models).

For the exhaust you could go to TNT, Wildcat, Viper, etc (there are more that I don't know of)

For the filter look for a place that sells BMC or K&N filters, either should do fine. The filter however might not make a big or any difference, as the OEM filters are pretty decent as well.

For a chip I am not to sure as I have not really looked into this myself, but someone else should have a better Idea.

To change the diff ratio talk to Gizmo (he's on this forum), he should be able to help you out.

As streetracer has posted on many occasions:

TNT Branches & Full free flow exhaust
BMC Drop in filter
Uni-Q chippie
Slightly higher diff ration

You wont have a super race car, but it will be faster..

a 325i will still take you.. or a slightly worked shitty golf..

Amen Andrew  , you can go full works but 6 cyl transplant will be much cheaper, and efficient!
The problem is BMW has a heavy lump to carry and the 4 cyl does not produce enough torque to make it fly..
Even if you up the compression to 13-1 on methanol, individual throttles etc. you will have a competitor for a stock 328i..
6cyl conversion will cost around R20k but you not looking into turbo but that is the best route for your needs!

On 0.6bar boost you will make almost double the power and torque you make now and it will be good for a daily driver and long distance traveling. but thats my opinion, all our turbo BMW's drive down to the coast and see every 1/4mile event around, plus they bring us to work and back every day.. our low boost cars boost 1bar and high boost 2.5bar. and not a days shit!

0.6 bar on stock internals is your route cost vs performance and fun factor!
my 2c

Wow, thanks Sankekur, Andrew & Streetracer.. Some very, very useful info right there
which i'll definitely be making use of!

Another thing, what are your guys views on Dyno tuning? Should I, shouldn't I?

I've always been skeptical about that since I was younger and watched them dyno
my boet's car... he was almost in tears the way they ran it through the gears lol

you cant dyno tune your car if you do not get a chip installed!
But dyno tune a car puts the same resistance on your car as driving 5th gear on an up hill on 120km/h and put your foot down! My car has been dyno tuned more than 50 times as i change my setup allot to see what works best on the dyno and track, and my engine is better than ever.. no need to worry!

As mentioned, the 4 cylinders just dont cut it when it comes to bang, unless you go the turbo route. I know when it comes to the old e30's the newer motor is a viable option but not so in your case. A Turbo 318Ti will give that "T" a little more meaning as you drive most cars away.
At most I think you'd be looking at 20wKW from those mods @ R10k. Save up, do a basic turbo conversion as StreetRacer mentioned and you'll be smiling, and not only when you pull away from the G-Forces exerted on you, but also from the amount of fun you'll have..

Is your Ti Manual atleast?

LOL alright, i'll keep that in mind. I'll just be spending R20k this year though, 10k on those mods & another 10k on my wheels. Next year i'll save up for the turbo.

Yes, my ti is manual :D
