Hi guys. im totally new here. i drive a e46 318i a/t 2004 model. n46b20a engine. 146k mileage. Recently i noticed that the car has a terrible misfire/ flat spot under 2000 revs. its very intermittent & only happens when engine is at normal operating temperature, drives perfectly above 2000 revs though. Eml hasnt come on. i have looked for vacuum leaks around the intake but couldnt find any also replaced 4 new bosch ignition coils, spark plugs & fuel filter.

Has anyone experienced anything similar & resolved this problem successfully?

Does anyone know of a mechanic in the Durban area who would be able to diagnose this fault?

Any Input Or Advice Will Be Greatly Appreciated..

Before you spend another cent, take it to somebody to do diagnostics using at least INPA or more correctly, ISIS or DIS....

First guess would be a vacuum leak, but it could be a Cam position sensor, vanos, all kinds of issues...

Diagnostics will point you in the right direction instead of changing out bits until you find the right one...

COmmon E46 318i problem that no one is really seem to be able to pinpoint AFAIK.

Check this post where guys have similar issues : http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=3173

There have been many suggestions , and probable solutions but no one with anything concrete. My car has a similar issue , and has been to BMW 7 times whilst under plan to try and rectify the problem , even had it taken to Rosslyn for a technical team to check out. Still unable to pinpoint the problem.

@R1d2303.... WELCOME to the forum... you'll enjoy yourself here...

@zaleonardz.... if you remember a post I put some time back, i got codes for my 318i and it was Cam Position Censor as well.. good advise. But I agree, it can be anything.

Hi Guys

Thanks for your inputs, highly appreciated.

I managed to take the car in for diagnostics. Found out that the MASS AIR-FLOW SENSOR is faulty.

Does anyone know where i can find a suitable maf other than the stealers :banghead: who wants R5500 ?

Do you guys think that second hand is a good possibillty?

Regards.

Before buying a new MAF disconnect the old one and see how the engine runs-as it will go to a default map,if it runs better then it definately is the MAF,if it stays the same then there is almost definately an airleak....when the code for MAF comes up doesn't nesseccarily mean the MAF is duff.....
