Hi everyone

Lets start with the car details.

E46 318i touring steptronic. 2002 model and only has 144k on the clock. Got the car secondhand from a family memeber. The car did stand alot and was only start once a day for a few minutes to preserve the battery. Car was also only servised by BMW.

I got the car about 3 years back and it went beautifully. I did have to change the battery and the water bottle cracked and had to be changed aswell. 4 months ago i had to change the coild. found that one was faulty and changed all 4 just in case.

A month or two back my wife started to notice that the idling was getting low. From my guess around 600 to 700RPM. I might add that the car only did like 8km a day to her work and back home. And seeing as i do about 50km to work and back i decided to use it more. Thought it might need a bit more of a run.

The low idling didnt go away so a new problem started. When i come home from work it sometimes cuts out on me for like a second then starts up again when driving, only showing me the battery light. It sometimes does this for 4 times then its smooth sailing from there. The low idling when im at a stop still there though. And sometimes when i pull away from a stop it stolls. No problem starting at all. Start first time.

So before i send the car in to have it put on a the dianostics and all i would like some advice on what it might be.

Any advice would be nice.
Thanks
Z

Howzit and welcome to the forum!

Plz post some pics of your bmw....

Regarding your car issues, i am no expert but it sounds like 1 of your coils could be starting to give issues, another theory regarding your battery light coming could be your alternator.

Best is diagnostics and a few other members will advise you further.

Hope its nothing major.

*sorry just read you already changed coils... Hmmmm also thinking it could be your fuel pump going and not pumpin at the right fuel pressure.

You my dear sir, own an N42 motor in your 318, which means that your life is about to start sucking a lil.

Search the forum for N42 info, there is quiet a bit.

Motor is quiet tricky to diagnose as well.

Most likely curprit is your VVT system.

Whoever you take it to, make sure that they have proper BMW diagnostics, or you have no chance.

BMW is going to kill you in diagnostics, cause it could be a list of issues, but most likely its your VVT motor,

Hey...

Thanks for the replies. OK.. so after reading throught the threads i did some DIY and tested the VVT motor on top of the tappit cover and got no reading between any of the poles and the casing. And from what ive read that means that the motor is OK??

I will however take it in for a diagnostic next week and let you know what i find. Thanks again for the replies.

P.S. Ill add pics later today....
