318 Touring

Hi,

I am considering purchasing a 318 touring A/T. I had the sedan version of this car and it was a nice drive, but it was just too slow and a bit heavy on fuel. I was wondering if this would be worse on the touring version.

The car will be used as a daily in town commuter.

any advise will be welcome.

You want a bigger heavier car with the same motor? does not compute....

I thought there might have been something wrong with my previous one. The 318i just felt totally under powered. I was considering this vehicle for the wife(I should have mentioned that). I actually just need the space and fuel economy, I am also considering the A4 1.9 tdi avant as well.

Would the 325 Touring be a better car, and if so how is the fuel economy.

If fuel economy is your over-riding concern, you will be better off with a diesel.

The A4 Avant 1.9 TDis offer excellent value for money. If you can find one with a FSH and tack on a decent aftermarket warranty you should be fine.

I urban driving you looking at around 10/l per 100km.

Would not suggest the 318 if its fuel economy that you want. E46 320d did not come to this country if im not mistaken. Go for a diesel vehicle rather. the 325i is also not going to give you anywhere close to what a diesel will give you consumption wise.

We did get the E46 320d Sedan. Was notorious for popping turbos tho.

Thanks guys...

looks like the 318i Touring is not for me. Would have loved to have had a 330d touring. if they ever made one :=):

I try the BMW diesel touring route.

I also had the the E46 320d sedan (from faily new many years ago) . It was an amazing vehicle but because I want the space of a touring I didnt consider this option, and given that its going to be a seconhand vehicle its harder to find a well taken care of diesel. The petrol vehicles are a bit more forgiving over the years

E90 Diesel tourings are not common these days.

Meant to say, don't think we got the E46 touring in a 320d in RSA. I have a 320d sedan too at the moment and am very happy with it.

Agreed, a 330d touring in E46 would have just been awesome to have!

i have a 318 FL touring....consumption ..8.3L
i agree it not the most powerful car..but the drive is excellent...

E90 320D can be had for cheap these days, much more reliable than the pre-facelift E46 320D, but so is the facelift E46 320D. turbo issues was sorted on the facelift E46

The touring must be one of the most under rated cars in SA. I sold my 325 touring just over a month ago and I miss the space. (I love my new car, but I had 3 station wagons in a row before that so the lack of space is very noticeable.)

It just have been my impression but when I was in Europe there seemed to be more touring BMW's on the road than sedans.

320D touring would be a winner. (if only we could get the bigger engined tourings here in SA, 330i, 330d)

My ultimate car - :praise: M5 Touring! :praise:

I don't think you info is entirely accurate. The prefacelift had a 100kw engine which was quite reliable and many of them reached 200k+ km. The facelift (115kw) is where most of the issues started with popping turbos. Many of them had huge problems before 150k km (I personally know 3 people who have had turbos explode on their facelift 320d's on less than 150k km).

Legacy, I just had a look at the unladen weight of the e46 according to the owners manual. Only 50kg difference.
325i sedan 1420kg
325i touring 1470kg

I was under the impression it was more like 150kg difference, could the owners manual be wrong?

Acceleration 0-100km/h the sedan is 7.3sec and the touring is 8.4sec....hmm
