Hi Guys,

I'm looking at getting a BMW 1 series 120d 2012 model. It has 92 000 km on the clock. I hear a lot of people saying that I should never go for a 2nd BMW especially if it's around that mileage. And on the other hand some people actually say as long as it's under 140 000 km I don't have much to worry about. I just need to know if I should still pursue this and if I do what should I be on the look out for?

If it's still under plan, you can purchase a maintenance plan and absolve yourself of all risk of maintenance. Thereafter sell it before reaches the end of the extended plan. Different story if you plan on keeping it as a high miler.

If it has a full history and if an inspection finds no issues then I don’t see why you won’t get 200 000km without too many problems.

Many people avoid buying used luxury vehicles because of the perceived high costs, particularly the German makes. Sure they can cost more and maintenance can increase through time but these things are normal. Obviously a true lemon can hide its true faults until you own it but be cautious with buying used and you can get a great deal.

Do your research and test drive a few vehicles.

 do eeet  - great motors dont let any one tell you BS.
All cars have some sort of issues and some you lucky to do 300k and not have one single days problem, if it has been well looked after then there should be no problems.
The cars to watch out for are the ones that have been driven into the ground and or treated like race cars all their life - then you can expect problems.

back in 2001 i wanted to buy a 1993 325i, i did not because i listened to all that crap( regrets it , and allways will) . in 2014 i bouht a 1995 E36 328i with 161XXXKm , still running with no issues, ( sold it in 2016 ) currently driving 2009 125i Coupe with current 178XXXkm full BMW service history not stopping a heartbeat. Just do your homework around the car itself before you decide. Any car can be a lemon, any car can be costly to maintain. ( how many of those folks owned a BMW ? )

if this has FSH and looked after by prior owner it would be an excellent buy.
E82 120d LCis are hard to come by..
really solid reliable engines that don't give hassles.
if its auto , maybe get a gearbox service, after 100,000km check damper pulley.

I actually think that people buy cars and expect it to run without any issues, just fuel up and drive.

For me I read up on specific engines, possible issues, weak points etc and I do preventative maintenance as far as possible. While it is not always possible to know the ins and outs of a second hand vehicle, getting the right people to look at it ( dekra, or mech specializing in specific vehicle), getting the right people to work on the vehicle, knowing the history and confirming mileage will go a long way in ensuring the longevity of the car.

No matter what car you buy new or second hand you will encounter an issue here or there.

Always do your home work on a car before you buy it and keep cash aside for maintenance and repairs.
