2016 X1 20D with 8 Speed Steptronic Transmission

Good day fellow BMW drivers

I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue their 2016 X1 20D with an ( ZF Friedrichshafen) 8HP Tiptronic 8 Speed Transmission.
Essentially what happens is when i start the car and then move the shifter from neutral to reverse there is a distinct delay (4 to 5 sec) before the gear engages. Then after havening reversed out of the parking and i engage drive and start to pull away the first 1 or 2 gear shifts are not smooth. It is more of a delayed and hard shit.

This is more prominent when the car is still cold. And also less prominent if i accelerate slightly more quickly.

The car is 9 years old with 93000 km on. I have had the transmission oil level checked and it is correct. As far as i know the transmission oil has never been replaced. The service manual suggests replacement on 8 years or 80000km. However, when i asked BMW whether i should bring it in for a service they asked if the computer has a transmission oil service light on. Which it does not. BMW then said it does not need a transmission oil service!!!

Any advice on what is causing this and what i can do to remedy it will be appreciated.

Take the car to ZF directly to get the oil, filter and the seals in the mechatronic replaced.

The delayed and rough shifts are caused by seals inside the mechatronic unit that collapse over time and cause the delayed action in the valve body. There are many youtube videos to show how this is done on the 6HP and 8HP gearboxes.

Not sure where you are located, but ZF have service centres in Jhb and Cape Town.

I thought this platform uses the Aisin Gearbox known as GA 8F 22AW, and not the ZF?
X1,X2, 2 Series Active tourer, Mini Countryman

Which are quiet sensitive to the Oil gearbox service. Lots of threads on them from overseas mention these same symptoms, that the issue is then resolved with an oil gearbox service

The ZF8HP is solely designed for AWD and RWD cars. The X1 F48 is FWD coupled with the Aisin gearbox.

Correct bud.

@TerryX1 your car has an Aisin transmission, not ZF.

As advised get the gearbox serviced.

I think to go even deeper on this fact - this Box is found on any transverse engine BMW applications... so even if its An X1 X-drive or Countrman JCW All wheel - its still an Aisin. Not many people know this.

I just checked and there are actually A LOT of threads in the States about these boxes needing a service.

@TerryX1 Kindly elt us know of the outcome.. as my Mother in laws in laws 2 Active Tourer with the same gearbox is starting to experience the same symptoms occasionally

Who specializes in the service and repairs for Aisin transmissions? Me and my SO fancies the X1 F48 LCI as a replacement car for our F30, but the FWD and Aisin combo is a drawback.

If you stick to your trusted and recommended Workshop or mechanics it should be fine.
As long as they follow the correct procedures to ensure all the oil is drained and in the correct manner, and refiled with he correct grade oil, i dont see why there would be an issue.

Its not really a difficult process if you watch the videos.
