2013 X3 2.0D purchase

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie here and I'm considering purchasing a 2013 X3 2.0D mdoel with 107000kms on the clock. I have heard from a lot of people that once the car is out of service/maintenance plan-it's expensive to service a BMW.

Is there any truth to that statement? And are there any reputable alternative service places that aren't as expensive as taking it to the dealership?

Most people who have never had a BMW will say that they are expensive to service, yet how do they really know?

You get places like TuneTech, Ross Duncan etc. who do excellent work on BMWs for quite a bit less than the dealers.

If you are even remotely handy you can do basic services yourself and save a lot.

We serviced a 120d the recently and bought all the filters, oil etc. from Imcomex including an OEM BMW fuel filter all for around R1400. That amounts to 7c per km driven seeing as we service in 10000km intervals.

Any vehicle will be expensive if maintenance isn't done regularly, but with regular preventative maintenance you should have very few, if any, problems and your running costs shouldn't be any more expensive than most other modern vehicles.

I agree with the above, you will get a lot more smiles per Km in your BMW, and the servicing cost are not expensive. I have E46 and brother has a 08 Corolla, costs about the same to service his car and mine.

Service parts are priced equally the same as most other brands...

You'll be surprised at how reasonable oil services are at the dealers. When it comes to other items, you can find reasonable knowledgeable mechanics and purchase oem parts. The forum has some awesome advertisers that stock oem parts and also BMW Leo Haese Pretoria is a sponsor, John will always get you the best price on original BMW parts. Some things you can diy but depends on how handy you are or want to be. All in all it is a luxury brand and if a big ticket item packs up then you'll pay - get warranty for this. But for normal service items, you'll pay similar to most other brands.

I'm going on to 183000km on my 2013 X3 20d and I have continued to service at BMW agents. Most expensive service has been R5480. Other than that average cost around R2500 per service.

Routine services are not the problem......it's if something goes wrong that it's expensive. But. Look after the routine services and the risk of something major going wrong is reduced significantly.

He is based in Halfway House, Midrand.

I have never personally used him, but a quick look through the forum brings up only positive comments.
