2013 N20 Engine rebuild

Hi guys

Newbie here on BMW Fanatics and it just so happens that my F30 has been parked for 3 weeks now. I bought the car in 2017 with 55000km on the clock. I've put on another 55000 or so in the past year and a half. MP expired eaely this year. BMW Diagnosed a scored bore, and a few other things that would've had me spend the equivalent of my replacement value to repair at BMW.

After calling around I had a supposedly good mechanic from a certain BMW Dealer come strip my engine. I got the block and top completely refurbed, new pistons, bores, bearings, the works, by a third party. The mechanic now claims that he can't assemble the pistons, crank etc. Back into the block. Needless to say, I don't know if I can trust him to finish the job of reassembling my entire engine and getting the car running again. Any advice or recommendations of who I can speak to to finish the job well?

Jeez another n20, and at such low mileage :( , I'm scared to drive mine now... is your motor completely stock? Hope someone can help with a suggestion to help you out, all the best

I think I'll take some of the blame myself. The power is addictive, I enjoyed it a little bit too much. Engine's stock, but I'm running software on it.

I say drop in a RB26DETT and go scare some M4s :fencelook:

For real though, don't bother with the BMW 4 cyl motors..

As sweet of an idea as that sounds, it also sounds like an undertaking... A costly one at that! I've already spent a few bucks on labour, parts and engineering. Wish I'd joined the forum before buying.:hammerhead:

Hi, there are a few people who could easly sort out your motor, however, not many are prepared to work where someone else messed up and held liable for warranties and such. I am no stranger to BMW engines and have rebuilt quite a few. If you cannot find someone reputable like Ross Duncan in Midrand or Rob in Randburg (there are many others eg Tunetech in Kensington and Supertek in Germiston) your best bet will be a reputable referred Indy.

These are some of the guys I’ve dealt with but it won’t be cheap. I’d give Paulo a call from Supertek. Super nice guy (no pun intended) and always willing to help or advise and his prices are very good. Hope you come right.

Hi Slant

Thanks for yoyr response. I'll have a chat to some of the guys later this week and decide what I do from there.

sorry bud your mechanic sounds like a cunt. hope you get all the parts back most annoying thing is to find items missing during assembly. I would suggest tune tech, ross duncan or budler motorsport.

Why dont u ask the engineer if he'll put the engine together again ?

He's RMI accredited. And his story is that he's not a mechanic and won't risk hisk accreditation for a mechanic's job - which is understandable.

Haha. Ya, chancers that were trying to have a nice december at my cost. I didn't post half of the story! Budler was at the top of my list, we'll see how it goes after I've spoken to Ross Duncan and Supertek.

Just a little update. After quite a lot of shopping around and speaking to the workshops, I decided to go with AutoCure in Midrand. It's run by a guy by the name of Markus Minihold - supposedly has some racing pedigree. But anyway, I felt that he was the right guy to go with based on some reviews I got from a few friends. I collected the car today and will start a post in the 3 series section to journal how it goes. So far, 100kms and it runs smooth and quiet (as quiet as these 320is can run) And the power delivery seems quite on par with just after I had the tune if not slightly better. I'm going to run it in over about 1000km before I really start to belt it and see if all is in order.

So long as all the clearances ie
Ring to bore
Ring gap
Ring orientation
Rod to crank
Valve clearances
Are all withing spec there should be no issue in rebuilding the motor..many engine failures happen after rebuilds as the clearances where not measured accurately.
You can obtain these specs from the piston manufacturer as well as from the workshop manual for your specific car.

It's a service that I do provide but I am bot here to advertise merely giving you advice.

A reputable engine builder would charge anywhere from 25 hours to 35 hours of Labour cost at a rate between 800 to 1000 an hour. If you are quoted anything less than that I would honestly ask for the engine build sheet before paying any money.. here is an example of my spec sheet on a motor recently built

Out of interest. What did this cost you?

All in I spent around R46,500.

An a**h*le of a mechanic, engineering, new pistons, assembly, timing set, gaskets, transmission oil, and bits and bobs. It's a helluva lot more peace of mind I think in comparison to fitting a used engine who's history I know not of.

I appreciate any advice I can get. I don't want to have any further problems with the car at this stage. I'll get all info necessary and see if it all correlates. I'll drop you a PM if I don't come right with the info I get.

This was actually a bit lot more. I omitted a few items

I went back and the tolerances checked out. No issues with those.
