One reason is that the V6 is smaller so more space to other junk.
Another reason could possibly be that they are using it as a test bench for replacing all I6's (x35i/d designated cars) with V6's to open up the possibility of FWD cars through say the entire 1 and 3 range and part of the 5 and 7 range.

I'll lose all respect for BMW if they make FWD cars. The 1 series maybe because many 1 series drivers don't even know that their cars are RWD but anything else? No.
