Hi all,

What are the common mechanical issues that these cars experience?

What preventative maintenance items should be done on these cars?

How heavy are they on fuel?

Looking at buying a used one with around 79,000km - want to know if it’s a bad idea.

I would avoid it, even if it had the care package done early enough. There are numerous other issues outside of premature engine failure. People think they can mod it to close to M5 levels or that it is a baby M5. It is not. There is a guy who doubled down on engine failure and even has forged internals yet doesn't make what my M5 made 100% stock. The price gap vs. an M5 (currently) does not make any sense (this will change as the F10 M5 plateaus and starts going up while the n63 powered 550 becomes more and more difficult to sell and falls through the floor value wise. It is not any less expensive to maintain either.

Others might have more inputs.

If you are concerned about the fuel consumption, stay away.

N63 engine has many problems, I have owned one so I should know. They include but not limited to

Excess Oil Consumption
Fuel Injector Failure
Timing Chain Failure
Leaking Valve Stem Seals
Fast Battery Drainage

If I were you, rather look at a 535i, if fuel consumption is an issue for you, then a 535d would do.

Did they drive a 550i in one of the chase scenes, in the movie Tenet? The protagonist said he wanted a normal looking sedan, which was fast haha. Sounded lovely...

I have 535d with software n downpipe, what a joy! But obviously won't sound like that awesome v8. I once looked for 550i and it left some bitter taste after I've read more them issues..but they do sound sound lekker with intake n downpipe with midsection delete: for me..go big and get the real M..will follow one day and get full real M

I don't have a 550 but I also have the same n63 engine in my x5, and I absolutely love it.
But I was extremely lucky to get one with zero of the above mentioned issues and I'm keeping my service schedule very tight especially with oil changes.
All of the above mentioned problems have there origin from the heat that the twin turbos build up in the v of the engine.
The engine have a auxiliary waterpump that keeps on circulating coolant to cool down the turbos after engine shutdown. If the vehicle battery isn't 100% that pump will shut down prematurely with a massive heat build up in that v.
It can actually get so hot that it damages the exhaust valve stem seals and that will cause oil burn off.
It will also burn oil in the turbo oil return lines and can actually block them completely.
Long story short...yes they do have issues...yes they do have way more risks and maintenance needs than the standard engine. Yes they are heavy on feul....but I can't get rid of the smile on my face every time I take her on the open road.
