Hi Guys,

So have had my 2011 X3 3.5 petrol Xdrive for about 2 months now have noticed that the double exhausts only one is really sooted up {right one} and that the other hardly looks used, also on cold start the exhaust fumes and or condensation only emits out the right one, is this normal with the 3.5 turbo petrol aspirated versions?

Don't actually like this set up as it looks sh*t, any suggestion car is still under M/plan?

Cheers.........

My understanding is that

The other side will stay closed until it's needed (pass a certain rev range).e.g past 3.5krpm

Its part of emission and consumption saving etc...

To do the test get a mate to rev the car while you stand behind you will see the second one open if all is well...

they must rev it hard though..to 4krpm or so:rollsmile:

As mentioned above, the rear muffler has a valve in one of the exhaust outlets, which is electronically controlled based on the vacuum (load) on the motor. From what I've read elsewhere for other models, this valve remains closed on partial throttle openings to reduce noise.

I've disabled mine, so the valve stays open and gasses escape from both tips. I can't honestly say that there is a noticeable increase in noise or drone (that back muffler is huge and does a good job of keeping things in check).

From what I have read, the function of this is to allow the exhaust to get to optimum temperature faster for reduced emissions. Therefore it implies that one exhaust outlet will have more flow than the other if we consider total engine 'on' time. Yes there is a second flap that should open up at a certain throttle value.

I suppose every bit helps on this gas guzzler :biglol:

Our one was emitting an eye-watering 16.7l per 100kms on the last tank.

Yup we are at around the same 12,4lt/100km so not too shabby really for amazing performance and that 8 speed smooth auto drive you get from her.

Would love to see four pipes at the rear like my old M3 but would most likely be frowned upon by M/plan or cost another mortgage on the posse ........

Thats why I went for the 3.0d, not much difference in performance but what a lovely fuel consumption. 750km+ on a tank.

You went diesel, I have been burnt with diesels and injector sh*t bud won't go back there for awhile although I really miss my X5 which was also 3.5.

As for "performance" this X3 is like my old 335i coupe it has phenomenal acceleration and top end through the 8 speed box ........... {have you driven the 3.5} :tiptoe:

Having a X3 with that awesome sound of the 35i must be great, but I can't see myself filling up that often. The 3.0d will be amazing as well.

On another note - why are you referring to it as a 3.5 turbo? Is it just due to the badge?

Hi Bud,

2011 BMW X3 xDrive35i

3.5 means the following in the spec's here-under.................

With eight automatically shifted gears and 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque on hand from its N55 six-cylinder, the X3 xDrive35i delivers strong acceleration. 5.5-second 0-to-60-mph estimate. The quarter-mile goes by in 14.2 seconds at 97 mph, with the firm, reassuring brakes halting the X3 from 70 mph in 165 feet. (The outgoing X3 xDrive30i was 1.6 seconds slower to 60 and 1.3 seconds slower to the quarter-mile post but notched essentially the same braking figure at 169 feet.) The new X3’s acceleration and braking numbers are strong enough to outdo all the players in the aforementioned comparison test by a significant margin, including the Lexus RX350, Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4MATIC, and Volvo XC60 T6 AWD

It may be badged as a 35i, but is still a 3.0 turbo and not a 3.5.

The "outgoing model" as in the article (3.0i) was a N/A 3.0 motor:coolShake:
