False, There has always been a Xdrive variant of the X1, the E84s are RWD or Xdrive, and the newer F48 models are FWD or Xdrive - I have noticed a lot more F48s in Xdrive compared to the E84.

The X1 is based on the 1 series, and like the 1 series, climate control was an option. I have an E84 thats Xdrive and specced with climate control.

In terms of space, I would say that the x1 has more usable space compared to the 3 series, especially since the seats fold down, and the higher ground clearance makes life a lot easier.

personally, I dont think you need Xdrive on the X1, as its not a very capable offroader (imo) and lacks the ground clearance of other models in this segment, it also shares most of its underpinnings with the 1 and 3 series which are not designed for challenging terrain.

With the newer F48 X1, i would go Xdrive mainly because who wants a FWD bmw.

Agreed, also my sister had the X1 2.0d X-drive and that thing was thirsty compared to the one they test drove for a weekend (being s-drive)...

on long distance, Xdrive and Sdrive are very similar

Bud I think the X3 you drove probably had some issues as it isn't suppose to feel clunky at all and should have an overall better comfort level than an F30 320d.

Perhaps test drive a few more X3's and do not rule it out as I think long term you will benefit from the extra space and ground clearance from the X3 vs an F30.

F25 X3 was considered by many as one of the most comfortable drives in BMW at the time of production. Owning an F25 X3, I can definitely attest to that. Absolutely beautiful and relaxing drive. Could drive to Cape Town in a day without exhaustion.

The diesel models are quite reliable and relatively cheap to maintain. I'd look out for the following:

1. Vibration damper pulley would likely need to be replaced
2. Service the gearbox at ZF;
3. Have a look at the tyres, if all four tyres are not star rated or the same brand they can cause issues with the transfer case;
4. If it has a sunroof, open the shade cover and listen for rattles when driving

Also:

5. Review tyre prices BEFORE buying an m-sport varient - you can easily spend R20k on a set of 19inch run flats (To avoid nasty surprises at a future date)
6. Ive had the driver side wheel bearing fail, BMW wanted R10 000 for the job. Ended up having this done for a third of the price elsewhere
7. I had 2 of the rear light modules fail. BMW wanted R16 000 (R8000 per light) for this. Ended up getting this job done for about R2000

Great overall car. Even with the higher ride and wider rears (275's) fuel consumption on longer trips have left me very impressed (comparing it to a 320d)

Thanks learned this lesson with my msport 320d f30 the hard way. Many times over. It got to a point I wanted to change to non msport rims and put all 4 tyres the same size.

So an update for anyone interested, didn’t manage to go and look at the 320d GT. But the Mrs says she’d prefer the X1, I went to measure the boot versus the c200 and if we do go this route will have to be packed differently (we’ll have to learn a new way I’m likely going to actually try for the pram and wheels tomorrow just to be sure)
Although when I went past today I saw a 2018 f30 320d msport with 40 000kms less than the X1 we’re looking at (albeit for R35K more)…and as much as I want it (REALLY BADLY) I can’t bring myself to pay double what I sold my F30 for under a year ago (albeit mine had 50k more kms on it and wasn’t as new with nav as standard, which this one has)

So at this stage the vehicles in the serious running are: a 2017 X1 sdrive 20d with 150000kms (but in absolutely mint condition, I could almost call it a demo it’s in such good shape) for R299k

I really like the 320d gt…2014 with 128000kms (unsure of condition but from reputable Bm dealer) for R270k

And I’ve just seen a 2015, X3 20dxdrive, with 150000kms for R249k from acs in Boksburg (has anyone ever had dealings with them good or bad?)
Is it worth going to check out?


And then I think is a X1 with 150 000kms on it worth the tag of 299!? If the Pram won’t fit in the boot certainly not. But if it does…it feels like an upgrade especially on the interior…but my mind wanders to 150k km’s and think is it worth that kind of spend…so very unsure whether I should just grit my teeth and keep the c200 to be totally honest

IMO the X1 is too expensive considering the mileage and I doubt preventative maintenance like a gearbox service etc. was done being a newish car averaging close to 40k kms a year.

My advice will be to keep the C200 and monitor the classifieds for any good deals on a BMW diesel that comes up that is worth the price and warrants you changing the C200 for.

On a side note not sure on the mileage on the Merc but those cars need to have camshaft gears and timing chain done as they prone to wear.

To answer the question does our current vehicle do the job? Yes (albeit not perfectly but is less of a compromise than either of the current vehicles we were looking at would’ve been considering their cost, mileage etc) so have decided to not buy either of the 2 vehicles we were considering & will rather wait to see if something comes up down the line here on the forums or anywhere else that’s not a compromise

for R299k, go check a 2015 Kia Sorento 7 seater option, auto, 2.2l with 140kw/450nm torque...great driver...68000kms on the clock. I drove this car and highly impressed...

Stuff SUVs... Buy an Estate...

I had an F25 for 4 years and racked up a ton of mileage in it. Never had a days problem.

If maintained well they will outlast your grandchildren. I have to say though they age quickly due to the tech and drive quality.

But saying all this and being in a G01 now. I want an estate. It's lower, sometimes more space, more practical, better fuel consumption, you sit lower so it feels more sportier its cheaper, and quite frankly it looks better.

2011 F25 X3 3l diesel with 168k on the odo. Have this car now for 2 and a half years. Spent about R2k on front wheel bearing. Had a set of 5 series rims and put these on the car with non run flat Michelins. Have done about 40k kms since i got it. Also had problems with the left rear park light going dead but after soldering the pc board got it working again. Took out the cat as well as the swirl flaps. Also had it mapped to about 625Nm. Only issue i have is a slight knocking sound when driving over rutted roads or my entrance gate runner and only when driving slowly. No noise or sounds when going faster than 60kph. Have done long trips with it and it is an amazing drive. Real pleasure when overtaking! Consumption on the longer trips average about 14km/l at the speed limit. I notice now that the rear tailgate struts have given up the ghost. Will have to replace them soon.

Having been burned on my last 320d having sold it quick to webuy cars (@160k) last year, whats opinion on the 2 above?

my concern on the f30 is that at that price I know what I sold my old one for (70k less) than potentially what The tag on this one is…so don’t want to overpay…I also see that any newer model coats way more than this and is over my budget.

I have no idea on the X5 if the price tag is over/under and potentially a 2011 does scare me slightly

Thoughts and advice appreciated

1. Do proper research to ensure this doesnt happen again, including cross checking service history, motorplan comments, enatis records etc.
2. Get a quote on service parts for the x5 to get an idea of running costs prior to purchase (filters, disks, pads etc)

Unfortunately the demand of 320d's have shot up considerably since you sold your 320d and WBC did shaft you properly as you could have got over 200k for your car at the time on this forum.

That said you will battle to pay what a 320d is worth according to the books and will be overpaying for any clean ones these days.

Burned is probably not the right word…being in a rush to sell I sold for way under what I could’ve had I waited (seeing what the second hand car market is doing now after I sold…so mainly self inflicted but hey)…Other than that, the car was a dream.
