So, having bought this car about four years ago I immediately removed the swirl flaps and the cat and had it mapped by Kosie Swanepoel Dev in CT. Drove it gently with the aim to get maximum economy out of it. Had not a days trouble with it. Sold it to my son about a year ago after i put about 40k kms on it. On the open road i would regularly get about 14km/l at the speed limit which i considered very good for the size of the car and engine. My son is with Discovery thus he drives like an old man as he would get points for decent driving. Recently the car started giving problems when it had smoke coming out of the air vents and losing power. Long story short, had the ac compressor "cleaned" whatever that means, the alternator serviced and still it would some times go into limp mode with smoke from under the bonnet and air vents. I suspected a sticking egr as there are numerous posts on Youtube about this problem especially in the USA. I got hold of an egr delete kit from Danny2 on the Forum and fitted it Friday to my son's car. Easy and simple procedure. The day before i had passed by Kosie Swanepoel and asked if they would program the car for the egr delete and they offered to do it on the Friday noon. After fitting the egr we had a good look at the black spongey tipe material over the injectors below the air cleaner and found that there was some what looked like melted sponge, not much but just enough to notice it and also some black soot on it as well. We had a closer look at the inlet manifold after the swirl flap motor and noticed two holes in the manifold which we plugged with Vasvat and Q-Bond superglue. Then took the car to KSD and had it coded for egr delete. After the fitment of the delete kit no lights was showing on the dash but to be certain we did have it coded out for in case it came on later. Haven't done much driving after this but certainly hope and believe the matter is fixed. Will keep you posted. Apparently the egr valve gets stuck and hot exhaust gas keeps entering the inlet manifold and causes melting and burning holes into the inlet. This causes the sponge sound deadener over the engine to melt causing the smoke. It could cause a fire if left too long i would imagine. I would suggest all drivers of N47, N57 and B47 engined cars to keep a look out for similar problems. I am going to do the egr delete on my F30 B47 as soon as i can get hold of a kit.
