Hi guys

I need help, first off I'm a rookie and have no idea about motor and stuff so please bare with me.

Recently I done my 2010 X5 e70 3.0D xDrive ecu mapping. Map was done by Saftrade and I could see a improvement from 9.4l/100 km to 8.2km/100 km. Nice!! When the tune was done they noticed a leak on the boost pipe. Took it to get sorted and ended up reconditioning the turbo also. Saftrade also advised that we do an cat bypass and this was done by quickfit as per referral (this was also bypassed on the mapping side). Quickfit apparently took the dpf off and cleaned it and put it back. Now my question, there is a heavy diesel smell within the car when idling, its so heavy that one can not leave the windows open but you can still smell it when with the windows closed. The mapping was done to try and get better fuel economy, we trying to safe as much money as possible as my wife is not working because she is looking after our autistic daughter. What can be done to get rid off the smell but not make the consumption worst? Like I said .. I'm a newb so please bare with me!

On my old 2005 E53 3l diesel X5 i also had a bad exhaust/diesel smell. It turned out to be the exhaust manifold which was made of a double layered stainless steel manifold which had started to crack (common problem on those). I had it welded but as it is double skinned, did not achieve 100 persent results. To get the manifold off i had to take the injectors out. On refitting the injectors i missed a copper washer on one of the injectors and it started leaking diesel as soon as i started the engine which would accumulate on top of the engine and started congealing and melted and gave off this diesel smell. It became so bad that when the car was cold i had to chip away the melted diesel to get the injector out to fit the washer. That is my experience. This also was the older m57 motor. Yours probably has the N57 motor which is quite a different design, so am just telling you my experience. I am not sure if yours also has the stainless steel exhaust manifold, but you will be able to determine that by just looking at it as the stainless version is sort of shiny and the cast iron ones are of course dull looking. You will be able to see if it is cracked if it is stainless steel.

Hi there

That is normal when you decat a Diesel car.
You will get an increased diesel smell as there no no restriction of the gasses or fumes being burnt.

You will learn to be alert to when yous tart it. I make sure my wife and baby are not close to the rear of my X3 20D when i start it.
Same with my 3 series 320D's that were decatted.

Thanks for the replies, I believe there is some bypass kit one can install? Not sure if this is worth the while?
