Hi, i have this funny whirring sounding noise which sounds much like the sound made by an idle control valve (keep in mind i have a diesel) which goes on for a few minutes after switching off the engine. It seems to come from the passenger side of the engine and down and below the engine covers. I can only hear it after i have switched off and i am not sure if it is making the noise when the engine is running. Recently removed the swirlies, blocked off the egr and replaced both the egr and normal thermostats. I only noticed it long after that, so am quite sure that it is not related to my mods. Any ideas what could be making the noise?

And performance issues after doing the flaps and egr? Might be a vacuum leak or something but I'm only guessing here.

No performance issues although i think my old 2006 E60 530d did perform slightly better (160kw vs 172kw) It does not sound like pressure leak, sounds like a motor or something running on after switch off. And it is not going slower like a fan that you switch off, stays the same until it stops completely after a few minutes (still have to measure the time it runs on). I will have to remove the engine covers and try and determine where the sound comes from. Just thought some one might have solved the issue already

If we are referring to the same sound, my car always made that sound. It sounds more like an electronic hum. I know that the car is still awake after switching off and the initial reading i did some 4 years ago was that it was the electronics that was 'awake', after a few minutes of no activity the electronics would shut off completely.

I didn't think to continue any further after that. I hope we hear the same sound.

Definitely electrical. Some electrical motor running on after switch off. Not aware of any motors around that area of the engine! Will take covers off and investigate!

Took the covers off and cannot find the origin of the sound. Sounds like it is coming from underneath the inlet manifold, but cannot be sure. Takes about a minute to go quiet. Will have to learn to live with it, i assume!

in my case, theres a distinct click when it stops and everything shuts down. for example the start/stop button stay lit for this time also. and goes off with the click and that noise.

If it's in sync with the start/stop button lighting then it's normal.

Yes, bought it about 6 weeks ago from a guy in Citrusdal (who bought a F10 535d, nogal). White m/s built in 2008 but reg in 2009. 155k kms on the odo. Very good condition, had oil service at agents just before sale. Not as economical as my 2006 530d, but averaged about 14,7 km/l coming back from Upington the other day cruising at speed limit. Sorry, cellphone pics! /img_0618_8044656021.jpg[/img]

Decat, egr delete, new turbo pipe seals at intercooler, new thermostats as it was running cold. Still want to fit nice exhaust tips. Blacked out the rear bumper insert. Funny specs as it does not have std bluetooth (Parrot fitted by previous owner), has pdc front and rear but no xenons. (Not a big fan of xenons as my last E60 had it and did not make big difference to night driving in my opinion and very expensive when they blow). Also, car has non run flats but still a bit harsh for most of our roads. My old E60 was non m/s but with Stiaan's 18 inch m/s wheels (same size and style as wheels on this car), but was the perfect combo as the drive was nice and not harsh. This car is quite a bit more stuck to the road than old one though! Has sunroof which i like. Not a fan of the alu trim inside, kind of like the wood trim. Also, one or two small dents on the alu trim in panel in front of passenger seat. (Iirc, Stiaan's 2008 m/s also had some dents in the trim). Could i assume it is a common problem? Car also a bit quieter than older one. Has the new gear stick which i still have got to get used to, reason being I recently got a 2l diesel X3 6 speed manual for a bargain price which i drive more frequently.

This car deserves its own thread.....
my car also did not have BT standard and i found th esame with the alu trim, its like you can drop a bunch of keys and it can scratch and dent it. I personally dont move around with alot of keys so mine hasnt deteriorated. The Msport suspension is quite stiff and somewhat harsh. I have read on international forums on guys putting a set of good dampers and lowering springs, but getting better ride for the average commute, but stiffer when under load and cornering etc.

They definitely are quite, i think the E90 with the same motor are louder, but that could just be the extra sound insulation ...lol

Sorry, mentioned in my last post i had replaced the turbo boost pipe seals but when i cleaned out the intercooler (was not dirty at all) the boost pipe connectors were quite oily. Bought the new seals but when i wanted to replace the seals they had not leaked after i had driven about 300kms, so did not replace them at the time. Will keep an eye on the connectors at the intercooler.
