Lol!!! Olorin we've owned 2 320i's,currently in the process of selling the last 1, I've had my fair share of dices with these cars. Golf 1.6i's tear the 320i to shreds off the line it isn't even funny, manual or auto no matter how good the BMW driver is (the gear change in the golf is quicker). The other night I had a bit of fun with the touring against a golf,320 only scored on highway driving towards top end...and guys, saying 220km/h top speed is being a bit generous I think. :)
The 260 reading on the speedo just makes you think its fast :)
Nevertheless this thread was exaggerated a bit,lol but a fun read. I think it has enough 'oomph' for its target market.

I certainly will stay away from the 320i in future and the 320d is the only 4-pot worth considering otherwise BMW I6 FTW!!!

Sorry, I simply don't believe that. I don't believe that a City Golf can tear a 320i to shreds. I don't care how quick the gear shifts are, the 320i is rwd and has considerably more power. If you were beaten by a City Golf, then shame on you, seriously. What's next ? A Corolla 160i also beating a 320i ?

In a drag test, a 320i will leave a 1.6 Golf in the dust. More traction, considerably more power. We are talking about City Golf....Velocity 1.6. The new Golf 1.6 is a POS. My car should be quicker than a current Audi 2l FSI. And here we are talking about City Golf's making mince meat out of a 320i ? It's funny.

Lol ok dude, by all means go and race one from stand still and post your results. I tried it once with the E46 and had to play catch up until 3rd gear. I don't bother with racing 'tampons' off the line with a 320,it's a loss. Try it.

EDIT: With the E90 auto I played catch up up until 2nd gear. Call me a shitty driver if you want :) but try it and tell us please

Take a look around. You are the only one that cannot fathom the scenario. The fact that the bmw has RWD is a DISADVANTAGE at every speed on a straight line except when pulling away vigourisly. Obviously there are more drive train losses on the RWD. I dont think people will take kindly to your comments if you rather believe your own inaccurate logic than their driving skills. It doesnt take a race driver to do a dice between a 320i and citigolf. Please take the time and try and understand the reason why things are as they are. Maybe actually take a look at my graphs?

BTW: following the real world logic, the 1.6i corolla will not beat the 320i. Its also heavy.

Olorin sorry but the guys are right... It is way easier to launch a citi golf and a e90 320i just weighs too much if they were closer in weight the citi would not stand a chance...

but the way things are the pretty evenly matched... chances are if you meet up with a 1,6 you will lose just because he has probably had more practice launching hard...

you will destroy your clutch if you launch hard often...

Why ? There should be more traction with RWD. There are advantages to greater traction besides just pulling off.

Really, excellent logic given the thread title and the fact that I drive a 320i and then because I disagree with the preposterous idea that a Golf 1.6 could beat my car that people won't take kindly to my comments ? Give me a break. You don't think fellow 320i users would take offense to the thread either ?

I simply don't believe the crap that I'm reading from you. I'm perfectly within my rights to disagree with your assessment.

If a Golf 1.6 could beat a 320i then it has to be on the heels of the Audi 1.8t because I'm telling you now the 1.8T is not that much quicker than a 320i.

Dude if you don't believe all our 'crap'. GO AND RACE A GOLF 1.6! Hell for the fun of it race a 1.4. He might even give you a run off the line. Seriously dude, I was talking from experience and I'm not the most experienced of drivers given i'm only 21 but I would think I know how to drive considering i learnt when i was 13 and out me as a shitty driver...until you race a golf bud :)

Olorin i think you missing something here... in order to get a PERFECT launch you need to make sure the engine does not bog down...

there are two things that stop bogging down:
wheel spin and letting the clutch slip...

now with your car wheel spin is not going to happen so you will have to slip the clutch alot to get a good launch...

too much traction is also bad to strait line performance... for the best performance you need just the right amount of traction not as much as you can get...

Look this is like fighting with a stubborn child. I did not say a 1.4 will beat a 320i, i meant off the line even a 1.4 can give you a run for your money. Dude don't underestimate those golfs for stand still starts. But ytf are we arguing, you don't believe very valid points so go race one and come back to us.

The top end of the 320i is 220 km/h. It is not being 'generous' to say that it actually achieves that speed since that is the top speed. Claiming a car can reach 220 km/h when it can only hit 210 km/h is being generous.

Excuse me ? Mr 21 year old, you are one to talk.

Lol I was waiting for that. Did not mean it literally.
Anyway bud go race the golf. That is the only way for you to settle this argument.
And about the top speed. Use the GPS, take your car off the clock in a safe environment and read the true speed, no matter how hard I tried it didn't want to hit 220.

+1, But I don't think it matters anymore. The bmw 320i beating the citi is his religion, and no logic can take it away from him. He believes it even in the presence of perfectly sound arguments from many of the reputable fanatics. I am just wandering where his argument disappeared to regarding the 320i being quicker than the 320d at higher speed?

Just read this whole thread... sore eyes..

on the 4cyl topics..

We have:
1992 E36 316i (1.8 4cyl)
2000 E46 318i (1.9 4cyl)
2004 E46 318i (2.0 4cyl)

Of these 3 cars, the e36 feels the quickest off the line as its lighter.. It has 85KW & the 2000 E46 318i has 87kw but its heavier.. Any other car (Shitty, Corsa, etc) with 1.4 or above I do not even try as they kill me) & its not my driving, as I know how to launch the E36...

the 2004 e46 is a auto so it feels a bit pap up to 3000rpm, but after that it moves but still is not a mean machine..

Currently we have a new 320i from the dealers, it has 2000km on it so I am assuming its a 2010.. its also an auto & its not too slow but similar to the e46...

We are currently looking for a 2008/9 Facelift 320i to replace my moms 2004 E46 318i. As its for my mom, it doesnt need to be fast or a 6cyl as she does like 300 to 400km a month.

So for what the car is & for who the car is aimed at I dont think its a piece of crap.. I think its pretty decent...

but any Citi with a cone will kill you

Remember this is the guy that posted like 4 or 5 threads about increasing the power of a E90 320i.. even posted one about supercharging or turbocharging it..

So if its such a fast car, why the need for performance upgrades??

So you are saying from standstill that a City Golf 1.6 will beat an E90 320i off the line and will continue to beat a 320i overall ?

Am just wandering where his argument disappeared to regarding the 320i being quicker than the 320d at higher speed?

Because my car can rev higher and I don't have big dips in my torque curve. It will just keep on going to it's limit. Eventually you will reach a point where the odds have to run in my favor. Of course, you may deny that but then you own a diesel so I don't expect you to admit that.

Yes, let's all gang up on poor me. Although I don't know what the above has to do with anything. I never claimed the car was super fast. I simply wanted to improve the performance of the car which is a different story. But hey, a little City Golf 1.6 can take on an Audi 1.8t and win.

Let me ask the fanatics a question. Can a City Golf 1.6 take on a Lexus IS250 ?

We had a 320i 2007 sportspack from new, biggest mistake ever due to us having 325i's upwards. I raced my friend in his 1.6 golf and of the line we were the same and up to third then after that i started pulling away.

The car looked and is great just the engine is not period:hammerhead:

:drama: Wow so much drama, if I where emo this would make for a great livejournal entry :)

All I can say is, don't underestimate the massive role that weight plays in a car. Small cars can be around 400kg lighter than an average BMW and that makes a massive difference. How massive, load your car up with 400kg of stuff and feel what the performance is like them.
