2008 135i Convertible xenons

Have a friend who is having problems with the ballasts on his car. They got wet and after replacing one ballast the other headlamp was also wet. Is it possible at all to just get halogen lamps and fit them into holders and into the existing headlamps or will they not work as xenons are i think projector type lamps? Also seems as if the self leveling is not working. Is there a remedy for this?

I bought an aftermarket replacement from violet electronics. 2 years later and no issues.
