I have just bought a second hand Bmw X3 2.0 d. The car has got 245000 km on. Everything works but when i exalirate there are black smoke coming from the exaust just for a second then its gone.

What can be the cause. The car has got a full service history and it is well looked after.

Hi Welcome to the forum.

You bought a diesel its normal.
You might want to get the EGR cleaned and the DPF might be blocked by now.

What is the DPF. I have read that the EGR is the devil and some guys opt to block it off? Must i go that route or just clean it?

DPF - diesel particulate filters

Its like a catalytic converter on petrol models.

Best to do is block of the EGR and remove the DPF and fit straight pipes (Down Pipe)

You might need a software upgrade but it is the best for the car to keep the oil cleaner.

That being said the car will smoke more. Which some might not like but the engine will be healthier

Why would the car smoke more when removing the EGR and DPF?

Is the smoking normal for diesel engines that have that many kilos on?

I just want to let u guys know that the problem that i had with the smoking of my bmw X3 was a cracked inlet pipe between the intercooler and the egr valve. Smoking gone fuel consumption is beter. And power is back
