Amazing work! :bravo:

On the engine rebuild, would you say this is generally the case for an M car with 150k kms? Would most M cars require this level of work or is this an extreme case?

Engine ran bearings which is typical of the S series NA engines

Owner said in for a penny in for a pound and we started.

Cleaned the original oil pump which is perfect and re used it.

I know of people saying that the oil pump should be changed on a new build however BMW has pretty much built an indestructible pump on the S motors.

Only know of 1 failure with Glen but that is another story.

It's a beautiful thing, nice work Peter.

As for the "must replace" things, this is mostly forced by those who stand to gain, well, in my view anyway. If something ain't broke, don't fix it.

Amazing work there Peter, and genuinely thank you for the pics. I know how irritating it must be if you yourself have to pause work to get a snap because it forms a part of the story!

Amazing to see an engine like this being built up the right way! :praise:

As for the classic BMW's in the background :inlove: Me likey! Is it e12 535i, Amarok, e28 M5, looks like another red 2 door e30 and the iS?

Cars in the background are e28 535 to be converted to M5 and M5 e30 333 and iS

You will recall our discussion about the M88 sometime back...well you looking at the body it will go into.

On a separate thread there was a discussion of bearings being done.

Here is a good reason as to why you need bearings done on the S engines

I have used a vernier to measure which is 95% accurate as I do not have a 50mm digital micrometer so I would not be able to show you the measurements clearly.

Here is a standard not worn journal for the conrod.

Here is the worn journal that ran a bearing.

This journal is beyond cutting to clear the score marks as it will take the crank to extreme undersize.
In addition the crank was bent with runout of 0.2mm where the factory stipulates 0.002mm runout.

Carrying on

Even with the front removed the engine needs to be inserted very close to the firewall.
A slight lapse and it will tear the paper that BMW uses for soundproofing

Absolutely insane.
These are often the things overlooked by trusted rebuilders and hence the reason why rebuilt motors fail.
All these anomalies in tolerances add up to one catastrophic end :dunnoanymore:
