During last week, the gearbox got stuck in 3rd gear but after standing for a while it rectified itself, but now the gearbox does not change over as smove as before, especially going from first to second gear, it jurks, but also does not do this while cold, just when it was driven for a while, Spoke to bmw, they said i must bring it in, as it is either software or oil change in gearbox, will this be correct and if so is there anyway you can do it yourself ? or any other sugggestions as to what the problem might be and how to rectify it.

Listen to BMW/MINI.

The oil is very possibly at fault. I wont bother going into a long story about the technicalities.

Software is also an issue.

You have a 2006 model so I assume it is a R53. Those boxes and engines are rock solid. It will be something simple.

I also assumed you were talking about a Auto?

I dont know if this is going to help or not, but we've had a simmiler problem where the voltage was a bit low. Results was same as your car. The learning curves of the gearbox needed to be programed. (Initialisation of gearbox)

My wife had the Mini cooper CVT (Non S). we had similar problems and BMW had to RE-teach the CVT box when to chnage and at what traction / torque. She now has a Cooper S Automatic 2005 model. As far as I know, Cooper S has a traditional steptronic gearbox which utilises a
traditional torque converter with hardcoded software for steptronic mode. In other words, software should not be a problem, probably the oil in the gearbox.

Hi Chantel,

Please be very careful with BMW. They are full of shite! We had alot of problems with them as well. The Midrand branch is terrible. This should be a quick fix that should cost no more than R2000.00.

Cant see what exactly is going top cost R45000.00 :dunno:

Hope you still on motorplan....
