Hi guys

It's bee a while! E39 540i was stolen in Midrand circa 2012... then got a Fortuner as I was getting into the 4x4/offroad thing.. quite gatvol of it now though lol! Next car for myself in 2016 is a 5 series... But now to the point!

NOW. Getting back to the Bimmers. My wife is picking up her vehicle tomorrow in George - 2006 BWM 323i M/sport steptronic. I have seen many BMWs in my life - owned 2, close friends owned many etc - but this is an extremely clean specimen. Spotless top to bottom and inside. Been looking at a vehicle for her. 2nd car. Bit tight budget as we are expanding business etc. So pound for pound from what we sourced this one for 120k is the best value for money in my opinion.

It has 160k kms on the clock and a FSH at BMW. Took the car for a drive and bloody smooth. Planning to keep it for say 2/3 years and from there we will upgrade.

Fun opinions on the following most welcome - would love some feedback.
1) steptronic.. maybe not as fun as a stick.. but still doable? I was quite impressed with the performance (not a 540.. but still lekker!). What is your opinion on steptronic vs stickshift or A/T only? It seems like most of the cars are moving toward steptronic. very few stick shifts?
2) 160k kms.. "high"? Yes. But for a well maintained bimmer that is not a lot in my experience (first bimmer was an E34 535i which I had from 120k kms to 260kms... only a thermostat replaced in the entire time). What should we be "looking out for" ?
3) Any feedback on general maintenance costs?
4) We are getting an extende warranty for in case. All good to cover major malfunctions?
5) Will be able to make it a bit more "vocal"? I was quite surprised that this one had a nice subtle grunt to it. Not quite E30 lol! but a nice deep purr. What can I do make it sound like it's got a pair?? for Cheap? And will it effect extended warranty?

Thanks in advance guys!

Watch out for lifter noise.

Seems like an impossible task to fix. Even the dealers simply replace the entire head.

You ll never go wrong with a straight six, this cars are reliable, but watch out for the following, electric water pump, contaminated vanos solenoid, leaking valve cover due to broken valve cover bolt, and noisy valve lifters, but lifter noise you ll only experience if you drive short distanes and not changing oil in time or using wrong oil, other than that, touchood
