2005 120d turbo suction noise

Hi all,

I had a look around the forums, to see if anyone else had this problem, found a few with whistling problems...

My 2005 120d has recently decided to start making a deep sucking noise, almost as though a pipe has come off somewhere, I took it over to TechnoSpec for a oil and air filter service, the guy had a look and said I shouldn't be worried, as it doesn't sound like the turbo is in any danger of blowing... but I'm not so convinced... before the service, he thought that the air filter could be blocked, after service, same thing.

Any ideas on what it could be. If you close the windows you can hear the sucking noise, but if i stick my head out the window to listen, I cant hear anything?

There is only smoke if I am heavy on the pedal at pull off in 1st gear, and seem to see a little bit of smoke in 4th gear around 2000/2500rpm.

And I have noticed a little bit of oil leaking on the driveway..

Haven't really noticed any drop in power, but I must admit, not really pushing the car at all, since the noise came about, living in fear of a small nuclear explosion under the hood.

If needed, I can record a clip of the sound.

I'm no expert in motor vehicles, so hoping one of the geniuses here could point me in the right direction.

Thanks

One of my mates had a similar issue on his E46 320d, turned out to be a hairline crack in the intercooler, but he had a drop in power, changed out the intercooler and is now boosting better than before...

I posted my "suction" problem on my 120d. The plastic chargepipe is prone for developing cracks/cuts.

If you drive the car you can hear the suction noice on the left side of the engine bay as if it is coming through the caby-hole.

See if it is that. You can see the cuts/cracks by stretching the chargepipe with your fingers.

Hope that helps.

Cheers guys, Twinz your problem is spot on to mine, coming from the left hand side etc... trying searching your old threads... Am I looking at a R500 fix or a R5000 fix.

EDIT - Found the part on the bmw fan site, with a rather useful diagram, a lot bigger then the ones on realoem, is it cool, if I post the link here?

Cheers man

Well, If anybody would like to know for future reference, I took it in to BMW garage, and it's costing me R4000 in total to replace the torn Booster pipe.

R3000 for the part and R1000 for labour.

Thanks

Hey Yobstar, I don't suppose your car has motorplan still on it, but next time, maybe ask some members. We get a lot of parts for much cheaper than the agents if you ask around a bit.

Glad you got it sorted though. Is the car pulling like it should again?

Hellas, the car is still at the workshop, should get it back tomorrow afternoon, then I'll let you all know, and sadly out of motorplan...

Glad it wasnt anything worse.
Would try trace that oil leak though. Hope its not coming from anywhere near the turbo. Or head :fencelook:

Just glad the problem got resolved. I paid the same amount for mine. Did not feel like sourcing a cheaper pipe. Agree with Hellas, it would be good to know of cheaper alternatives.
