2004 X3 EML Error 4x4 safety mode

When going at speed 100 to 120 the car loses all power all of a sudden and EML Error comes up with the 4x4 Warning sign so you stop switch everything off start immediately afterward and the Car starts no problem no power loss but 4x4 Warning light still burns..

Whats the cause please help!

Sounds similar to LZ's x3 that had chain failure on the transfer case???

Or am I completely missing the pot here?

What is the mileage on the car?

The 4x4 warning light will come on if there is a problem with the transfer case, a well-known weakness of the E83 X3. Usually, the chain drive in the transfer case stretches, the clutch packs or the thrust bearing wear out.

Are there any clacking sounds or grinding sounds from the front of the car, especially when turning? These are dead give-aways for a worn transfer case.

A rebuild by ZF will cost around R20k.

The mileage is now on 167 k we just replaced the cylinder head on it and I am still trying to find a affordable cam tool set to set the cam timing perfectly missing it with 1 to 2 degrees according to the diagnostic either on exhaust or on inlet driving me nuts or does anyone have a tool set I can hire for a day to set the cam timing correctly I am in the Southern Suburbs Cape town?
