Hi there.

I have a 318i sedan and it should have the same N42B20 engine, and from my research into a similar problem it appears our engines don't have a VANOS system they have a Valvetronic system. Not sure if you mech is taking you for a ride or what.

Wait,.... I think it might have both Vanos and Valvetronic.. But apparently the vanos don't usually fail on these because it's a different kind to the 6 pot ones...
If the scanner says cam shaft position sensor then I'd probably replace that first, they are know to cause sheet on our cars.

Anyone else with some input?

I can confirm for a fact that the N42 has both vanos as well as VVT.

Vanos is for cam angle, VVT is for valve lift.

I have never heard of a Vanos going on an N42, but have heard of oodles of Valvetronic problems

I would, before you get to all of this, just change out the intake cam sensor which is two minutes to do, re-calibrate the VVT motor.

Are you electrically inclinded at all.

If you take a look under the plastic cover that goes over the head, you will see a bit fat motor looking like silver thingy (its a technical term)

That is your VVT motor, if you measure resistance between each connector and the body, If you find a resistance value between the coil and the body of the VVT motor, you need to replace it.

as said before, first replace the cam sensor.

i purchased a cam sensor from Goldwagon late last year for R365, stealers ask around R1200.
