What exactly is wrong with it. Sometimes the unit on the back of the abs goes us and then you can replace it or repair it. Combined Electronics are wizards when it comes to the electronics on modern cars and a friend of mine had his 2003 E39 525i abs control unit (not sure what it is called) repaired by them for R4k They are in Plattekloof
This proves knowlege is power..... In that control unit is in total under R100 of parts and they probably replaced a R10 part.
I suggest get it checked out and ask whomever to explain exactly what is wrong with the control unit and show you physically.
From what I undestand the later ABS pumps for these cars have the control unit as part of the pump. there are a lot of writeups on DIY fixing or replacing the board at a reasonable cost as all the failure modes are very well known. In some cases the ceramic circuit boards crack and can still be repaired with a soldering iron, in other cases a wire comes loose and can be easily reattached.
If you are really careful and do your homework first I think you can come out of this with spending far less than R7K
