Good day fellow Fanatics

I am in the process of buying a 330D:rollsmile:
Its a 2003 model 6 speed manuel
It's got allot of goodies, like electric seats, sunroof and so on

It has a full service history and appear to be in a very good condition

I has 163,000 on the clock

Now my question is, is this to much?
How reliable are these cars? and what must i look out for?
How are the services?

Thanks

Leon

For a diesel that is very acceptable I'd say. When well maintained those go for a very long time.

provided it is meticulously maintained, its not to much. but can easily become a money pit if hidden defects..

takes almost 7 litres of oil at a oil change, otherwise servicing not too bad..

Leon PMed me and as it is in everybody's interest and I trust that Leon agrees so here is my reply in the open:

Leon quite franly.... I wouldn't like to touch an E46 330D with 163.000kms on the clock

The car WILL break and then its the software that gets blamed.
May I suggest -if thats an option- you look out for a E90 320d
Thats a far more reliable engine and it will give you by far more pleasure than the E46 330D

Greetings

Rolf

And if you really want to have software installed, you will get more reliable power out of the 320d with software, downpipe and exhaust than from a stock E46 330d

Only reason a am looking at this car,is because it is in excellent condition, not a scratch, and it has a full service history at BMW
I can also get a 2 year warrenty on the car
I am paying 80% in cash, i don't want to big of a car payment

The E90 is a little bit out of my price range at the momement
The E90 never was in my taste, i like the E36 and E46, and the F30, but I will wait a few years for that one!lol

Thanks for the reply and honesty Rolf, i will be in contact:thumbs:

Does the 2 year warranty cover turbo etc and what about labour costs .
If you remove the swirl flaps will this warranty still be valid ?
Bakkie diesel engines go for 600 000 km or so , they are running at lower stress levels .
Test drive a few if you can , maybe keep R10K for a turbo replacement .
I am old school , if you look after a car it will not give trouble , only wear and tear from use , not abuse !
Maybe send Barkie here on the forum a pm and get his views , he had his 330d done by Clutchy here in East London after a swirl flap failure .
Good luck .

Both these claims are the biggest load of :bs:
Seriously - a 320 being more reliable than a 330???:biglol::roflol:
Zaleonardz' 530d has got close to 200k on the clock with software and pushing 600nm if memory serves me right and it still hasnt exploded.

I am not to worried about the power!
I am sure the 330D has more than enough of that:=):

I just like to know what can be done do make it more reliable, or to prevent future major damage

Did you actually read what it all about?

And your reply "I know someone who...." as as much Taurus Excrementi as what you call my post and reply to Leon then

Do you seriously, SERIOUSLY deny that a E90 320d (M47TU2D20) engine is more reliable than a E46 330d (M57TUD30) engine???

:nonono:

:blab:
Any tune on a turbo car will stress everything more and increases the risk of a breakdown. Period.
I dont care on what application.
Thereby claiming a smaller tuned engine with similar performance is more reliable than a std bigger one, I can deny.

do the swirl-flap removal and do preventative maintenance on your cooling system. Also check suspension bushes, then she should last you a long time.

@Fordkoppie

Most probably like in school times.... sit down; "F" for missing the subject!

But like Sabretooth tiger states above: preventive maintenance will do the trick

The thing I am on about is that YOU said it "WILL BREAK"
Dragging LZ's car into the argument merely proved that it is not a given as depicted by YOU
