Hi Team,

So i sold my e90 320i and i am looking at replacing it with a 320D e46. The replacement car is a 2002 BMW 320d and has 220 000 km's on the clock. How reliable is this car? I read somewhere and they where saying there were issues with turbos with pre 04 models, how true is it?

Can you guys give me an idea of what things that are likely to go wrong with a 220K km diesel car? I just need to know what things to look out for so that i can make an informed decision.

BTW, the car doesn't have a service history, am I taking a chance buying this vehicle?

Thank You...

Yes, you are taking a big chance.
Look around for a clean example WITH service history.

At that mileage service history is very important.

I bought one a few years ago also 2002 with 180ooo on it and had a fairly up to date service history not at agents though but a oil change on a diesel is very important. Clean oil will help with turbo preservation. I know of 320d n47 engines that has 300ooo ks on with original turbo. But has always had the oil changed and crank case filter inners removed and the catalytic converter removed. And i did the same on mine and still have no problems at 230ooo km . The only other thing i removed was the little flaps in the intake that apparently had problems with on other cars . But once i removed the intake mine had the revised flaps so i didn't need to take them out bud did any way. They are good cars .
But just to be safe ill take it to n turbo specialist just for n look see. They will be able to tell if its in good shape with not too much trouble. Good luck
