Rust?? on a e46??

yep. remember this is a Durban car. nothing is safe from rust here. i suspect the owner lived very close to the ocean and parked outside. seems like under a tree.

My Grandparents car, 2001 model lives at the coast & has lots & lots of rust..

Our 1990 Pajero, been living at coast since 2000.. Had no rust before 2000.. Has so much rust, we had to fibre glass the roof to stop rain getting on our heads..

It all depends which coast.. Port Alfred is known for its rust

BMWS are renowned for their bulletproof 6cylinders. but i honestly believe that the mileage that the car has currently is not too high for a 2002 model. 245000km / 8 years = 30625km per year.

the other parts is where u need to start worrying.

like the others said, lower control arm bushes, brakes, clutch, electrics.

The rust is a big problem. I am originally from the coast. I have family who live in Umhlanga Rocks (the proper one, not phoenix) who have had an 2002 e46 320i since new, and has no rust.

Dont buy a 318i or 320i. no offence to the 318i / 320i drivers, but the 325i / 330i is a much better drive. also the economy on the bigger 6's is nice as compared to the smaller engines.

ive seen some much nicer 325i for sale in jhb. i think that if youre gonna be spending that kind of money, you should seriously consider not limiting yourself to dbn cars only. check jhb. if there are cars you like, send them to AA for a full technical exam. its a bit expensive (R1200) but you get a proper report on the car.

i am looking for cars around the country, so my options are wide open. as much as i would like a six cylinder, if i get a low mileage 318i that ticks all the right boxes for me, i will take it. i've been driving my 318Ti for over 2 years and it was a pleasure to drive.

so if anyone comes across an e46 (manual tranny) for sale, please pass the info my way.

if it is the same one i checked late last year, then they've been sitting with that for a while. i took it for a drive, just got out the showroom gates and made a U turn. very bad shape. i wouldn't touch it with a bargepole!

so far i've test driven 3 different 6cyl E46's (2 x 325i 1 x 320i) compared to the 318Ti, there seems to be more "bulk in the drivetrain" when going the gears. is this normal? the gears somehow feel heavier. i hope i'm being clear enough in my explanation.
