2001 320d flywheel burned

Hey guys im new to this forum and bmw ownership so i have a question....my clutch failed a few weeks ago and bmw told me that my flywheel was burned and that i have to replace it(R18K BTW) I didnt have 18k lying around so i asked them to help me i think they skimmed it and replaced the clutch, so my question is how on earth do you burn a flywheel, how does it happen? Ive never had this problem on my other cars before.

first thing about owning a bmw never ever go to the stealership if you are out of warranty find a good workshop near you who knows bmws
im sure someone on the forum will know a good place near you

metal does not burn so not sure how you could burn your flywheel if it is some how fixed now i would say they were talking crap

The 320d has a dual mass flywheel and you cannot skim it.

It more than likely got busted up from standing at the traffic lights and riding the clutch while you wait for green.

by burnt flywheel they mean the surface of the flywheel (where the clutchplate mates the flywheel to pressureplate) has been heat damaged by a slipping clutch or worn clutch or driving habit.

this means the surface that is supposed to be perfectly flat is now scoured or warped, if you refit a new clutch on this surface the clutch will shudder everytime you pull away..

most flywheels can be resurfaced, (some dual mass clutches are difficult though) but being the dealers the always want to replace instead of fix..

Thanx for the help! i suspect the previous owner abused the clutch cause it was slipping and now its fine after they replaced it. I just lift my foot off the clutch to pull away i don't even need to use the accelerator.
