OK so the "big ship" is starting to annoy me

Every second or third coming to a stop at traffic lights/stop streets etc, she just dies.

and when she doesn't die, she sometimes (rather mostly) idles smoothly for about 5 seconds, the jerks/misfires for 1 to 2 seconds then smoothly for 5 seconds then jerkingly again and so on.

any ideas on where to start solving this

Idle control valve at the back of the manifold?

all of the above provided you have checked all vacuum hoses and there is no sign of deterioration on them.

a vacuum gauge plugged into any of the vacuum lines will give an indication.
They sell them at Midas and the like

I remember having a similar problem where car would die while driving and it would also have low revs at times, so I changed the maf sensor and all was well. I had some other problem too but can't remember now what it was, so I changed the battery too and never looked back again

Talking of MA sensors have you done a diagnostics reading on it?

nope....don't have any diagnostic equipment, don't know if my usual mechanic (minor services etc) has this equipment, he has a small (hand held) diagnostic machine, which we have used to clear airbag fault light.

what would be the effect of unplugging the MA sensor on the engine running..?

The car will go into limp mode.

Where are you located I could send you an OBDII reader to clear the faults if they are superficial.
If you are close to Sandton I could do a full diagnostic on the car.

thanks for the offer...I also got your email ...
I am in Kempton Park, the stuttering and intermittent idling and dying makes me too concerned to drive such a long distance to JNB north/west, I will rather either "tinker around" myself, or take it to my regular mechanic here in Kempton, although I have my reservations that he will be able to fault find the problem (he is OK for normal service items..oil etc)
