Hi guys I've just bought a 2004 bmw e46 and when driving on uneven roads there's a rattle coming from the drivers side tyre anyone know what could be the problem
Hi ashley, welcome and congrats on the new ride....sure you will enjoy it.
Maybe try post a sound clip to assist in diagnosing the issue. Could be a host of issues, if its a tinny metallic rattle could be something like a loose dust cover or if its a heavier clunkier sound might be something on the suspension...sure some of the more tech savvy guys could assist if you post a clip of the sound...
Thanks for the prompt reply wykid the sound only comes around when the car is in motion so ya think its really serious or its more of a metal noise but only on bumpy roads
Welcome to the forum, need a little more info. What is the km reading, service history? Has the car been used on gravel roads? (gravel eats up control arm bushes and ball joints.) if it's a tinny sound, could be a loose brake duct/backing plate or missing rattle clips in the caliper. Check the shock too, I've seen a couple that have broken and rattle like a calypso band. Good luck.
Hi I work for honda and I've put the car up on the lift the ball joints looked fine and the armbushes even the rattle clips on the brakes are all intact is just on really uneven roads this metal nice starts otherwise its fine ...thanks for replying
Hi guys I've taken my car to the mechanic and he said the problems coming from the driver rear side wheel ,there is a rattle clip missing on the brake part is it possible that's causing that metal rattle noise???

That's why it's called a rattle clip, because it stops rattles!:rollsmile: Seriously though, it may well be the cause, but normally more sensitive than what you're describing, even small movements should make a noise, not only on rough roads. (also depends on your definition of rough!). How violent did you get with your suspension, it may take some heaving to expose worn parts when standing on a ramp. Good luck, hope it's only the clip.
As for your rattle prob that might very well be the thing making the noise and might be ding it all the time it just gets a bit louder on more uneven roads.
But maybe just go over your control arm and bushes again to be safe.
Hope you get it fixed, nothing worse than driving a nice car with a metal rattle you cant find.
