1st time BMW owner

Hi All

It is my first time here and I just bought 2002 320d

One owner vehicle in immaculate condition. 150000km engine replaced by BMW under warranty on 80000km.

I would just like to ask what do I need to be aware of on the maintenance of the vehicle.

I heard a lot of stories about turbo failure and swirl flap problems. Any truth to this and how can I make sure all is in order.

Thanks

Hi.

Welcome to the forum.

Congrats on the car.

Be weary of the early e46 320d. There have been a few incidents of turbo failures and other problems with those cars.

A new engine might not mean that the turbo was replaced as well.

Best to be proactive and plan on a replacement turbo(not reconditioned), rather than have the turbo fail when you don't want it to (not that you would ever want it to fail). This could set you back around R10k, which is better than what a turbo failure could cost you.

Congrats man, and welcome

Hope you enjoy your stay. But one question, why was the engine replaced?

I don't think the why is important... Its more the WHAT that is.

We know that engines fail. Especially the early e46 320d engines. Bmw might have replaced the internals, and refitted the same turbo back on... Which might mean that the turbo is actually 150 000km old instead of 70 000km.

Hi guys

I am waiting for a history on the car from BMW and as far as I could determine they did a engine swop as the engine number changed and the turbo was replaced at the same time.

As soon as I have more information I will update you.

Hi Guys

A few questions as matter of interest.

What would cause heavier fuel consumption on E46 320d? Could an overdue service be the cause of this?

How should the turbo sound? Should you hear it? Sometimes when you increase the rpm you will hear a soft whistle for a few seconds but nothing when the car idles.

What could cause the ABS light to stay on?

Where is the best place to go to for parts/service parts in Durban?

Hey bud, welcome. I just got a question. Did you buy from a dearlership or pvt sale? If a dealership, take it back, let them sort out the Abs fault. That can be a small fix or a big 1. As soon as you start to fiddle there, you might not have any ground to stand on.
Just my 2cents

Regarding hearing the turbo - I can usually hear the turbos spooling up when accelerating in my Dad's X5 35d. Drove a MK5 GTi for a month and heard the turbo everytime I put my foot down.

I don't think you can hear turbos when a car is idling as it isn't under load - could be wrong.

Hi I bought it privately what should I look out for on the ABS light

I am no expert bud, I am sure 1 of the guys will shed light soon. Maybe send it in for full diagnostics test. Not sure who in Durham does it, someone will advise soon.

Post some pics when can.
