The dirt wasn't too bad as the E90's wheels were washed about 2 months ago before they were fitted. The E39's wheels were washed a year ago when I took ownership. Back then the dirt was damn hard to get off, as it must have been 11 years worth, but a year's worth is nothing really.

So we first soaked with this, diluted with a bit of water in a spray bottle:

And then, washed with this:

E90 wheels came out ok, Chef looks like your wheels need a dedicated wheel cleaner as well as some iron out....

Also it would be a good idea to use some tar remover/goo gone to remove the old double sided tape from balancing weights. Then seal after, makes a huge difference when the barrels of your wheels are spotless.

Well done for taking proper care of your wheels

I do hate that tape, yes.

I actually want to have the wheels refurbished. Thanks for the advice. Where do I find these products, and prices?

NO probs, I just love cleaning wheels

For all my details I use auto finesse imperial, I buy the 1lt and dilute it 1:1, for home use 2lt of wheel cleaner will last you super long, and the price is not bad at all :

Imperial Wheel Cleaner

Iron out can be used twice a year, I do two complete cars with one bottle:

Iron Out

Tar remover works well on those areas with baked on brake dust/tar and even works great on glue residue :

Oblitarate

Wheel wax should then be applied, its a great way to protect the paint on your wheels, thereafter you wash with normal shampoo and only use wheel cleaner once a month:

Wheel Wax

I would strongly sugggest a foam trigger from crazy detailer, makes the job much more pleasant(for use with wheel cleaner)

So the method:

Rinse wheels to remove loose dirt
Apply wheel cleaner and agitate with detailing brush(makes it much easier if the wheels are off the car)
Dry completely
Apply Iron out and wait 15min
Rinse off with HP washer
Apply tar remover only to affected areas, let it sit for a few minutes and remove with mf towel
NOw as an additional step, I like to clay the wheels to get rid of any extra dirt
Wash wheels again thoroughly with APC(you can use diluted cleen green)
Dry again
Seal with wheel wax

Here is a picture of the finished product:

I apologise if this is seen as advertising, but I do not have the unmarked pictures, mods please remove if need be

You will not want to refurb your wheels after

Came out good guys.... .but

if you havent polished or waxed the rims, or dont in the very near future.., your hard work might just be a waste.

When i got my 19s a few weeks back i cleaned them with some new stuff i purchased from Crazydetailer which is a wheel cleaner and a product similar to Iron out.

At the time i was lazy to remove and polish/wax, 2 weeks later i the wheel looked almost the same, the brake dust stuck quite fast, everything looked dirty and there was no rain in PTA so it was just normal driving.

I took the plunge and cleaned up my wheels this long weekend..., much better.

Nobody removes anything of this thread :nono:

Thanks for the info, Kyle. Much appreciated. My wheels are unfortunately very scarred by years of use. No curb rash at all, but many faded blotches. That's why I want a respray.

I'll keep that advice at hand.

Used the iron out before. Works like a charm.

I like the look of that Obliterate. Need to go shopping...

Says the one who buys black wheels specifically so they don't look dirty.

Wheels will still get dirty with wax, but will be much easier to clean

Ahh I see,

well you still need to look after them once they're refurbed, so those products or equivalent are a must

Agreed the wheels will get dirty again soon. However, I don't do it too often. I guess the main reason for now is to keep them from getting the build up they had when I first got the car. It was MUCH easier washing after 1 year, compared to after 11 years...

Once the wheels are resprayed, I'll do my best to keep them looking like new.

I agree kyle, much easier to clean when waxed.

With regards to 11 year old rims.., i cleaned my wheels which had about 6-7 years of dirt on them.., not nice.., my fingertips were sore, my back ached and my neck had pains i never felt before.

We need products like goo gone cause i suffered the most with the residue from the weights especially. I will post up my thread soon.
