19s vs 18s on F30 M Sport suspension

Hi,

I am itching to get 19s to replace my 18s, but my main worry is tyre and rim damage (due to the lower profile) and replacement cost compared to my 18s.

I am not hitting potholes everyday, but the roads near my place are pretty rutted and rough.

I am not too concerned about ride comfort, but more concerned about the increased likelihood of tyre and rim damage and cost.

Any views appreciated.

Hi. The 19s ride fine on the highway. On slightly bumpy roads you feel the profile is too low and you can feel it hitting the rim now and again. I think the rear 19s runflats go for about R4500 to R5000 each. The 3s normally take a 255/35 19 at the back. It would increase you chance of damaging your rim but if you careful you should be fine. They look much better too. :smilebounce:

Been running 19s for the last 4 years +- and its a little rough on some roads but so far no damage to the tyre or rims.... I guess if you drive recklessly then you are bound to cause some damage in the long run.

After a bit of driving you will become more alert to things on the roads. Been rocking 19s (daily) for a while now with a 30 profile - no major issues. Had to sort out a buckle once.

It is a bit unforgiving on bad roads but it's not horrible.

It's also more susceptible to kerb rash due to the lower profile of the tyre.

I am actually impressed with the ride quality on 19s on my 3 series. The 1 series with 18s is actually stiffer. Truly speaking you start to be more aware of the road conditions and drive accordingly when on 19s, so I’m sure you’ll be fine. Replacement in Sep 2018 was R3800 for the rear tyres (Good Year).

I wonder how long 19s will last compared to 18s - assuming all other specs (besides profile %) are the same.

I am playing with 400Nm on my tractor.

Any 320d (or even 330d) owner comments?

Both my parents’ cars are around 55k km on OEM Bridgestone S001 255/35/R19 rears and both cars have at least another 10k km left in them.

One car is an F30 328i and the other is an F30 Lci 320d.

You get decent mileage out of a set of rear tyres if you don’t hammer it all the time.

I’m running 20’s on the F80 with no hassles and I drive a pretty bad road (Potholled road that has had all the holes filled with tar by hand, over and over ) and I’ve not had any issues touch wood.


As for the longevity of tyres it also depends on the brand. I swear by Michelin’s. I washed my car the morning and took the wheels off to give them a good clean. The rear tyres still look near new, and I’m not easy on them.

If my 19” set would fit you could always borrow to test how your car would fee on 19’s. The only problem is the offset and that the rear tyres on that set are very very very near kla.

I have a 330d and rear tyres last about 40-50km. Fronts last longer. I enjoy spirited drives
