I also get knock every now and then under 1500rpm on my 11.6:1 compression M42 2.0lt motor. Fuel octane boosters work wonders on high compression motors.

now mine is usually between 2000 and 3000 but it doesn't happen all the time. and it only lasts for about 500 or 700 rpms..

so what octane booster could I use.

thanks Gizmo for the help..

one more question, the "vanos rattle" that we hear from time to time.. whats up with that. whats the cause of it.

Worn discs in the spline shaft.

Look at post 46 to see what old discs look like and to see how the spline shaft fits into the camshaft.
That btw is one of my all time favourite cars.

Although that is an e46M3 the principle is the same on the s50b30

Definitely,Maybe,No.
Take your choice it all depends on how it gets driven however if it starts rattling it is a good sign that damage is likely to occur.

So this is what it is like under the spoiler.

You have the inner wheel arch cover as well as the brake duct and the bottom lip of the spoiler.

On the e36 M3 the brake duct serves as a secondary air passage for the filter as is the case with the e46 M cars.

Here is the brake duct which appears to have been recently changed and is missing the secondary air duct hole.

You will notice a protrusion on the left side of the duct...that is where the temperature sensor is installed.

After I drilled it with a hole saw 55mm for those that wish to know the diameter.

Thanks for not forgetting ;)
Did you do that yourself or send it in somewhere? Is it just the connections that get refurbished?

I normally inspect the fittings and hardlines for signs of stress cracks if i find no evidence I send them to have new rubber hoses fitted.
One could not do the repair without the proper dies and fittings.
Equally the hose used is the same as that used by the factory which is imported from Germany

I use a hydraulics shop in Strydom Park called Hydraulic Design Services which is owned by an elderly German gentleman who is known for 3 things
1 He is expensive like Beluga caviar
2 He is absolutely meticulous.
3 He is absolutely meticulous

thanks Peter.. the reason for my question is that it just very recently started on my car and was wondering if it could hold out till the December when I rip her apart and do all the bits and pieces on her motor.

Having seen your build threads I would say that you're not that far off. I would say just as meticulous as he is.

It's quite a long tedious process measuring clearances etc. It's one of those things I would leave to someone who knows exactly what they are doing, just like the vanos. Better to pay to have done right the first time.

None of the above.

Bucket style shims

Thanks Fordkoppie.. so how would one set them, can one set them.

You can only take the old ones out and replace with correct sized ones.
Tedious process.

And you need a special tool which BMW wont sell you. Not that that stopped me from making a plan
