1994 E36 316i - airbag light on

Bought this car about a year ago with 334 000km on the clock. The airbag light on the steering wheel was on when i got it. Would very much like to resolve this problem without going to the stealers with it. Anyone with similar problem/solution to the problem - info will be much appreciated to fix this problem. Is it the sensor in the seat or what? I have taken the wheel off and put some tape over the light on the steering wheel just to stop the irritation of the red light being on all of the time. I know that is not the answer - hence my request for help

There is either a problem with the airbag system, or something in the electronics of the airbag system was disconnected with the battery still connected causing this error to be read.
Get the codes read this will allow the error code to be cleared, if it was the last mentioned above the light will stay off, but if there is a real problem the error code will come back, but having the codes read will help you pinpoint what the problem is.

The car is presently being driven by a friend of mine, so taking a picture will have to wait till i see him again. The light is at the bottom of the spoke that points downwards when driving straight forward. It is a small red square piece of plastic. I think it is supposed to glow when ignition is switched on and go out after a second or two? Is there someone out there that has a code reader to pinpoint the problem?
