Hey Julz

Would love to have a look at your car. Any possibilities?

I see you're also in CT.

Just came back from the traffic department. Basically its gonna cost me around R 3 500,00 to get the licensing etc up to dat.

Don't have to de register, and it stays a '69 model.

Was expecting more, so I'm happy with that.

It doesn't look like you pay penalties if you wish to bring a car's license up to date. One (only) good thing about the traffic dept... Just don't be caught on the road in the meantime with that car!

Hellas, I think the only way I'll get caught on the road with that car (currently), is when I am sweating it out to get the thing on and off the trailer.:lmoa:

This is eventually where I would like to get. Notice the headlights compared to the ones I have. This guy spent $8000,00 on this car to tie up a few odds and ends.

I don't have that money.

Sure is nice though. Mine will be a similar red, same interior.

So I spoke to the mechanic just now who stripped the motor a few years ago.
He says it will be more cost effective to put a donor engine in there.

Anyone (Julz) with some ideas as to how and what I should use?

I was thinking maybe something in the line of a 2,8 motor from an old 728., but I want carb, not fi.

Any suggestions?

One word: Overhaulin' SA style. Which means you park it on the corner and watch it disappear piece by piece overnight, like that aeroplane in Lord of War...

Jandre I saw one of these last week in Belhar - a black one - not in great shape but reasonably complete looking. I'll chat to the owner next time and see if he has any spares etc

Jandre, I would not change the engine. That engine in there is the same as the old 520 motors and parts should be readily available. If you change, I would look at putting a 4 cylinder in again, to keep the car as original as possible. When and if you sell it to a collector one day, you can make a killing!

BTW, see the 2 Weber side-draughts in the pic?:excited:

I spoke to a bmw scrapyard earlier. They have a 2 litre 4 pot engine from an old 5 series there, still good with the head for 4k.

Wynandd, I share your thoughts. I would really like to keep the car as original as possible. The 2.8 would be more powerful, but I would really prefer a stock 2 litre 4 pot.

As far as I know, its a similar motor to the one in the 2002ti.

Maybe I should speak to Masterparts and hear if they have parts. That way I could keep the engine number original as well.

Jandre...that car will look awesome when its done. Interior parts for older BMW's are freaking expensive...ask me how i know.

I was contemplating putting in a 3.5L engine into my 6er. I would like to keep it original though, even if the engine needs a rebuild, so i reckon the 2.8L will stay. From my understanding, the 628 is a hell of a lot more rare than a 635. :)

I don't know Hellas. Somehow he thinks that the parts need to be imported. (Backyard mechie). Won't be using him anyway, but he is the one who took the engine apart in the first place.

I just came from Masterparts, and the total bill is R 3000.00 All I need to supply is the pistons.
This includes rings, bushes, all bearings, all gaskets, all valves, rocker shafts, rocker arms, chains.

Me, I'm getting excited.:excited:
