1969 2.0 CS restoration - Thread revived.

Since quite a few members signed up ever since I posted this. I am thinking of going ahead with this restoration.

Basically we are looking for a new engine, new interior, plenty of electrics, new tyres, brakes etc.

Good idea? Bad idea.

What do you guys think?

All we can do is encourage you Jandre,

Awesome project man, your going to have a lot of a fun with that even though your going to be pulling your hair out most of the time, but it will be worth it.

Further, and this is the important one, the cas will be worth much more as a classic with the original matching numbers as apposed to retro-ing another motor.

Eish boys, I want to, but I don't know if it is worth it. I need to:
1) Buy a second hand engine to use while I save up to recon the original. 5k
2) Clutch (1k)
3) Interior (Seats, carpets, rooflining) (6k)
4) Electrics (your guess is as good as mine)
5) ALL the rubbers (Again, your guess is as good as mine)
6) Brakes (Complete refurb) (3k?)
7) 4 new tires (3k)
8) Endless odds and ends. (??)
9) License in arrears (4k)

Since it was resprayed around 1990, it has always been indoors. (And I mean always). It wasn't really used, and it has been in a barn now for about 8 years.

I don't know about rust though. I should actually take a drive out to Piketberg and go look.

and Keep it Original! Engine INcuded! I know as a collecter of cars and various other things i wouldnt buy a car with a retrofitted engine in there, The more original the care the better it is, And that includes rubbers etc, Bmw Has all these parts, and if thay dont thay will order it for you,
I suggest u work up a list of trim parts etc and call yr local dealer and see what prices he gives before looking the aftermarket route.

A 100% original BMW will always be worth more and easier/quicker to sell.that is if u do sell it.

:drool: I would give my left nut! Bro, just some suggestions: Try the VW beetle restoration shops, where you could get universal type window rubbers in lengths, which you just stick neatly together. I think they'll rush you huge cash for originals, if you can find them, that is! I might be able to source some twin choke Weber carbs for you, with manifolds, but will have to check with my old man. Otherwise the car still looks OK. Upholstery could be done cheaply, but neatly, if you find the right upholsterer. I had my 1997 BMW 318i seats re done for R800-00 and they used the Audi type synthetic leather, which looks like real leather, not that shiny, cheapo, Spur seat type vinyl! I would love getting my own restoration project again. I did a 1968 Alfa 2,0 GT Junior, in my younger days and spent very little money, but made a fortune, when I sold her! Let me know, I can find out about that synth. leather for you and maybe get a estimate from my upholsterer here, who has a connection to get that Audi synth. leather. Good luck with the project!

What the status Jandre?
You could always fit a M10 or M40 from an old E30 318 until you get the original engine sorted. Or you could go for a 325i M20, which might actually be easier to get and will sound awesome

We actually sold this car off. Asked the new owner to send me some pics after they complete the restoration.

I decided to buy the 540i instead.

Pity. I could have helped with a lot of parts new or used. Advice as well. If the new owners need anything, you're welcome to put them onto me. A clean 2000cs is worth about EUR12,000 at the moment.

From experience parts are a challenge, busy with a 535iM 1983, and rubber pieces are not available locally, have been bringing in from the UK.
Patience good internet connection and unlimited funded are key!

I might have 2 of the original hubcaps for this car. Had it for about 15 years now - was told it was off a 2002 (and BMs of that era) when I got it ...
