Hi Guys

Does anyone know what the fuel economy ratings should be on an E36 318is? The current mileage I am getting is 16L/100K's and this is abit much. Does anyone know what could make this car run so heave on fuel?

Regards
Denver

I'm getting 9.7 on my 325i and I drive hard a lot. How long has it been like that. Have that shit sorted pal!

its been like this ever since I bought the car two years ago. iv rebuilt the motor recently and had the car dyno'd at budler motorsport and the print out showed no faults and the power was right too. Iv also installed a full free flow system with branch and gas flowed the head so it stands to reason with all this work done, the engine would run more efficiently. #very confusing.

Is the 16l/100 a reading from the obc or your own calculations?

I speak under correction....but have u checked the oxygen sensors? As far as my knowledge goes they send a signal to the obc as to whether the motor is running lean or rich. If the sensors go they will send a "lean" signal to the 'box causing over-fueling

http://www.dvatp.com/bmw/oxygen_sensors/ here's an artical I just googled. Maybe it can help

Also don't rule out computor error

Fill tank
reset trip meter
drive around till less than 1/4
Fill up
Calculate fuel used v Km's travelled,
Compare to computed consumption

I would first try to manually check the consumption, before trusting the computor
hence I hedge my bets on the computor error first until either proven right or wrong

I agree with Ralf. Try disconnecting the battery to reset ur avg fuel consumption readout at the same time and compare results

I`m with Ralf on this aswell.

And also this might sound very stupid but check your tyre pressure and size.
Pressure can make a difference some will agree, but the size sounds weird right?
Well lets put it this way, on my 318i I got around 11-12 km\l on the stock wheels, when I swapped to mags that are slightly bigger than the stock ones my consumption drooped to 8-9 km\l.

If I drive like a real granpa never reving just a little and never going above 90 km\h I get 10 if I`m lucky.

Just my 2c

My suggestion:
Fill the tank to capacity.
Then drive 100km.
Then fill it to max again.
Check how many litres it took.
This will tell you what litres per 100km, ur consumption is.
Then compare that to ur OBC reading to see if it is working correctly.
